Description
Each NASAMS (Norwegian Advanced Surface to Air Missile System) battery also includes truck-mounted 3D radar MPQ-64F1. The radar is mounted at the rear of a G-Class Mercedes 4x4 light tactical vehicle. The Raytheon MPQ-64F1 Sentinel high-resolution, three-dimensional pencil beam surveillance radar is used with the NASAMS to detect and track the targets.

Radar
The AN/MPQ-64F1 Improved Sentinel air defense radar automatically detects, tracks, identifies, classifies and reports airborne threats. More than 200 systems have been ordered worldwide, with more than 100 delivered or in production. Future enhancements currently in development include an 80 percent increase in the radar’s detection range. The new signal data processor of the Improved Sentinel has multiple On-Board Computers and is upgraded with a 10 slot VME-64x rack. Incorporation of the latest COTS technology brings improved A/D processing, faster radar control processing and additional slot availability for future growth of the radar. The Improved Sentinel also includes a new Exciter and Receiver. The Exciter is an X-Band, Single Lowest Replaceable Unit (LRU) that utilizes a single master oscillator to generate frequency. This provides the benefit of lower noise that allows for improved detection in Clutter. The radar’s Receiver is a Single Channel, X-Band Frequency, Single LRU which is designed to work in concert with the new Exciter. The X-Band Transmitter is modular and scalable from two to four TWT based Power Amplifiers for increased radar range and reliability. The New DC Motor Controller has a new digital interface to the Signal Data Processor which provides selectable operator control of antenna direction and speed. The system also includes an integrated identification friend or foe (IFF) capability that helps prevent fratricide.
Design and protection
The MPQ-64F1 3D Radar  is mounted at the rear of a G-Class Mercedes 4x4 light tactical vehicle. The MPQ-64F1 provides three dimensional position and velocity data on every threat detected, without the need for a dedicated radar. This detection and tracking capability provides the targeting data to the FDC (Fire Distribution Center).
Mobility
The NASAMS MPQ-64F1 3D Radar is mounted on the chassis of a Mercedes-Benz G-Class (4 × 4) light vehicle. The front of the vehicle is fitted with a crew cabin for two military personnel including driver and commander. The layout of the base G-class light tactical vehicle is conventional, with the engine at the front. Driver and passenger sit immediately behind the engine and cargo compartment at the rear. The vehicle is motorized with a OM 602 DE29LA 2.874 litre 5-cylinder turbocharged and intercooled water-cooled diesel engine developing 120 hp at 3,800 rpm. The G-class vehicle uses suspension with coil springs and telescopic shock absorbers, front and rear. Both axles are located by 1 transverse and 2 longitudinal control links. It can run at a maximum road speed of 138 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 800 km.
Combat use
The Improved Sentinel MPQ-64F1 radar is fully operational in minutes. It can be emplaced in less than 15 minutes and march ordered in less than 10 minutes by a two person crew. There is no need for any additional special ground handling equipment or personnel. Only a two person crew is required for full Sentinel operation; one operator and one maintainer. The MPQ-64F1 radar provides accurate pre-launch targeting data and midcourse updates to AMRAAM missiles. It offers a X-band, 3 dimensional pencil beam, range-gated pulse doppler, phase and frequency scanning, 20 and 30 rpm with electronic back-scan. It has an elevation from -10° to 55° with azimuth of 360° and a range of more than 120 km.
