The Iranian flotilla, comprised of Moudge class frigate Dena and IRIS Makran, will reportedly arrive at the Brazilian port within the next few days. The 86th flotilla set sail from the south of Iran in early autumn with the purpose of circumnavigating the world.

The trip to Brazil appears to be part of a mission to the Panama Canal.

On January 11, Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Shahram Irani said plans are underway to dispatch naval forces to the Panama Canal as Iranian servicemen are approaching the coasts of the Americas.

About the Moudge class frigate

The Moudge class frigate is a class of naval ships built by Iran. The class is named after the first ship of the class, the INS Moudge. These frigates are designed and built in Iran and are intended to be used for a variety of roles, including coastal defense, anti-submarine warfare, and maritime patrol.

The Moudge class is based on the design of the British-built Vosper Thornycroft (now BAE Systems) Mk 5 class, which was in service with the Iranian Navy during the 1970s and 1980s.

The Moudge class is larger than the Mk 5 and is equipped with more advanced weapons and systems. The ships are equipped with a 76mm main gun, anti-ship missiles, torpedo launchers, and a helicopter landing deck.

Moudge class frigates have been used by Iran for various maritime operations, including patrolling the Gulf, escorting merchant ships, and providing security for naval exercises. The class has been in service since 2007, and several ships have been commissioned in the Iranian Navy.
