On December 27, 2023, from Washington, United States, the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) announced the latest security aid package for Ukraine from the Biden Administration, representing the fifty-fourth tranche of defense equipment allocated from DoD inventories for Ukraine since August 2021. Valued at up to $250 million, this new U.S. military aid package, authorized under the Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA) from previous fiscal years, includes a range of military capabilities to meet Ukraine's immediate defense needs and strengthen its ability to maintain sovereignty and independence. Key elements of this assistance include additional munitions for National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS), Stinger anti-aircraft missiles, vital components of air defense systems, and more ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS). The package also includes 155mm and 105mm artillery shells, Tube-Launched, Optically-Tracked, Wire-Guided (TOW) missiles, Javelin and AT-4 anti-armor systems, over 15 million rounds of small arms ammunition, demolition munitions for obstacle clearing, as well as spare parts, medical supplies, and maintenance support.

According to data from the U.S. State Department, the United States has directed approximately $75 billion in assistance to Ukraine since the start of the crisis. This aid spans various areas, including humanitarian, financial, and military, with a significant focus on military support.

Regarding military aid, the United States has provided Ukraine with an impressive range of weaponry and equipment, including anti-aircraft defense systems, missiles, armored vehicles, helicopters, surveillance drones, and much more. Let's review the main weapon systems provided since February 24, 2022.

Javelin anti-tank guided missile system

More than 10,000 Javelin missiles have been supplied, offering Ukraine an enhanced capability to neutralize enemy armored vehicles with their infrared guidance and explosive power. The FGM-148 Javelin is an American-made man-portable anti-tank guided missile and employable fire-and-forget medium-range missile system. The compact, lightweight Javelin is ideally suited for one-soldier operation in all environments. The Ukrainian military has nicknamed this anti-tank system "Saint Javelin".

Patriot surface-to-ground air defense system

A battery of these sophisticated systems has been delivered, significantly improving Ukrainian air defense against aerial attacks, including ballistic missiles and combat aircraft. Patriot uses an advanced aerial interceptor missile and high-performance radar systems. The Patriot system is modular and highly mobile.

NASAMS surface-to-air defense system

With 12 NASAMS systems deployed, Ukraine strengthens its defense against long-range aerial threats, including enemy combat aircraft and drones. The NASAMS can be deployed to identify, engage, and destroy aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and to protect high-value assets and mass population centers against air-to-surface threats.

Stryker Armored Personnel Carrier

A total of 185 Stryker vehicles have been sent to increase the mobility and protection of Ukrainian forces on the ground.
The M1126 Stryker emphasizes crew safety through its use of high-hardness steel for the hull supplemented by bolt-on ceramic armor, therefore protecting a range of threats, including small arms fire and artillery fragments.

 M1A1 Abrams Main Battle Tank

31 Abrams tanks, among the most advanced in the world, have been supplied, providing unprecedented firepower and protection on the battlefield. The decision to provide M1A1 tanks, instead of the more modern M1A2 variants, was made to facilitate faster delivery and to align with the capabilities and logistical support available in Ukraine.

Stinger Man-Portable Surface-to-Air Defense Missile System

More than 2,000 Stinger systems have been delivered, enhancing Ukrainian air defense against enemy helicopters and aircraft.

Harpoon Coastal Defense Systems

These systems provide essential protection against enemy warships, thanks to their long-range strike capability.

Bradley M2A2 Armored Vehicles

186 Bradley IFV vehicles have been deployed, improving Ukraine's ground combat capability with their armored protection and versatile firepower.

ScanEagle Surveillance Drones

These drones enhance Ukraine's surveillance and intelligence capabilities, offering real-time aerial views for better battlefield control.

HAWK Air Defense Systems

Providing medium-range air defense against enemy combat aircraft and missiles, these systems further strengthen Ukraine's ability to protect itself from aerial attacks.

155mm Shells

The U.S. defense industry has supplied more than 2 million 155mm shells and 198 155mm howitzers, bolstering the Ukrainian arsenal for artillery operations. This assistance demonstrates the United States' significant commitment to Ukraine, providing crucial support for its defense and resilience in a prolonged conflict.
