At the recent World Defense Show (WDS) 2024, NORINCO (China North Industries Corporation) showcased Chinese military aeronautics, the BZK-005E drone. The BZK-005E represents an evolutionary step forward from its predecessor, the BZK-005, originally designed by the Beijing University of Aeronautics & Astronautics and the Harbin Aircraft Industry Group to serve as a reconnaissance platform for the Chinese Navy.

The development of the BZK-005E was spearheaded by Beihang Unmanned Aircraft System Technology Co., Ltd, a company now targeting a global market beyond China's borders. This drone is distinguished by its highly autonomous flight control system, capable of performing takeoffs and landings in challenging conditions, such as on high-altitude plateaus. Designed to withstand corrosion from salt, moisture, and fog, it is suitable for a wide range of environments, from plateaus to oceans and deserts, enabling all-weather and all-terrain deployment.

The advanced integration of its platform allows the BZK-005E to carry various equipment such as Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), electro-optical (EO) devices, reconnaissance, and communication relay systems. Its modular design is another advantage, facilitating rapid replacement of payloads according to mission requirements. With an endurance of over 40 hours, a ceiling of 8000 meters, a takeoff weight of 1500 kg, and an external payload capacity of 370 kg, the BZK-005E is ready to meet the stringent demands of reconnaissance and electronic intelligence (ELINT) missions.

The first model of this drone was assembled in Taizhou, Zhejiang province, on November 13, 2017, and all flight tests have been completed since. Beihang UAS Technology, based in Beijing, is now seeking its first international contract for the BZK-005E, following the successful acquisition of an export license last September. This milestone underscores China's ambition to become a pivotal player in the global UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) market by offering modern, high-performance solutions tailored to the needs of militaries and intelligence services worldwide.

With this drone, China not only demonstrates its capability to innovate in the military aviation sector but also its intention to expand its influence and presence in the international defense market, with WDS 2024 serving as the perfect showcase sought by NORINCO.
