Under the leadership of Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner, this acquisition represents an expansion from the initial purchase of 30 Pandur vehicles in 2021, which was an investment of 106 million euros ($113 million). These vehicles are produced locally.

A ministry spokesperson confirmed the imminent agreement as a "notable pact" regarding the acquisition of more Pandur armored vehicles. The details of this agreement will be revealed at a press conference next Monday, although the specifics shared with "Der Standard" have not yet been officially confirmed, they have not been contested either.

Minister Tanner praised the versatility of the Pandur vehicle series, highlighting their essential role in enhancing protected mobility. She considers this acquisition a key advancement for the nation's protected mobility capabilities and also emphasizes the significant local economic impact. The contract benefits not only Austrian defense but also stimulates the local economy by engaging a wide range of Austrian companies, including many small and medium-sized enterprises, in the production process.

The Pandur Evolution 6x6 is an armored vehicle designed to offer an optimal combination of mobility, power, and protection. With a maximum allowed weight of 19 tons and a curb weight of 14.5 tons, this vehicle has dimensions of 6.70 meters long, 2.60 meters wide, and 2.20 meters high, enabling it to operate effectively in various environments. It is powered by a 6-cylinder Cummins engine, which delivers 335 kW (455 horsepower), thus ensuring a power-to-weight ratio of 17.6 kW/t (24 HP/t), demonstrating its ability to combine speed and agility.

It is equipped with independent suspension and two steered axles, improving its maneuverability and stability across different terrains. In terms of protection, it meets the STANAG 4569 Level 3 protection class against ballistic impacts and offers protection superior to Level 3 against mines, thanks notably to a decoupled floor and seats, which help to minimize the effects of explosions under the vehicle on the crew.

The Pandur Evolution also incorporates a fire suppression system and an NBC (Nuclear, Biological, Chemical) protective ventilation system, ensuring increased safety for the crew in hostile environments. Its configuration allows for a crew of 3 members, plus 8 passengers, making it ideal for a variety of missions, ranging from troop transport to more specialized battlefield roles.

Pandur vehicles, produced in Vienna, are praised for promoting economic growth beyond their initial purchase. Advocates highlight that further investments in related infrastructure, such as garages and maintenance workshops, as well as the need for ammunition, will stimulate additional economic activities. An official statement on this purchase is now awaited.
