With its recent takeover of Spanish ammunition maker Expal, Rheinmetall has further reinforced its already extensive expertise in the field of infantry fire support. The Group’s product range encompasses a complete array of 120mm, 81mm and 60mm mortar ammunition. Augmenting these are fire control systems and mortar weapon systems like the 120mm Ragnarök and the innovative RSG60, a 60mm mortar system.

Army Recognition reported that Rheinmetall AG had completed its takeover of all shares in Expal Systems S.A.U. of Madrid. First announced in November 2022, the acquisition followed final approval by the relevant authorities. The transfer of Expal S.A.U.’s business activities to Rheinmetall took place on 1 August 2023. The purchase price for the takeover of Expal Systems S.A.U. was about €1.2 billion. Moving forward, the company will operate under the name “Rheinmetall Expal Munitions S.A.U.”. The latest order from the German government underscores Rheinmetall’s role as a leading supplier of indirect fire technology.

Rheinmetall is an important supplier to the Ukrainian armed forces with large amounts of medium- and large-caliber ammunition, including 20mm automatic cannon rounds for the Marder infantry fighting vehicle, 35mm rounds for the Gepard anit-aircraft tank, and 105mm and 120mm tank ammunition for the Leopard 1 and Leopard 2.

In acquiring Expal, Rheinmetall aims to secure and strengthen its core business in weapons, ammunition and propellants. The current Expal Systems product portfolio encompasses artillery ammunition, mortar and medium-calibre rounds as well as fuses and rocket propulsion systems. In many cases, Expal’s ammunition are “full shot” products, from propellant to fuse.
