Germany bolsters Ukraine Defense with new €2.7 billion military aid package.

Germany will provide more Leopard 1 tanks, Marder IFVs, Gepard anti-aircraft systems, and IRIS-T SLM air defense missile systems to Ukraine.


The German government, on March 29, 2023, approved an enhanced military aid package for Ukraine worth 12 billion euros. Following the endorsement from the Budget Committee of the German Bundestag on March 29, 2023, this unforeseen expenditure, called for by both the defense ministry and the foreign office, was ready to proceed.

The new financial support encompassed a 3.2 billion euro disbursement slated for 2023, in addition to credit lines for the time span of 2024 through 2032 that accumulate to roughly 8.8 billion euros.

In response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the German government's total support for Ukraine, based on data from the foreign office, has now surpassed 14.2 billion euros.

According to information released by the German Ministry of Defense, the new military aid of Germany includes 20 more Marder infantry fighting vehicles, 30 Leopard 1 tanks, and four IRIS-T-SLM air defense systems. Citing information from the German newspaper the new military aid will also include 15 Gepard anti-aircraft tanks, 200 reconnaissance drones, anti-aircraft ammunition, additional artillery ammunition, and more than 200 armored combat and logistics vehicles.

With this new delivery, Germany will further increase the number of armored vehicles and air defense systems already delivered to Ukraine, which included two IRIS-T SLM air defense missile systems, 18 Leopard 2A6 tanks, and 40 Marder IFVs. Germany has also supplied 15 Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft gun systems to the Ukrainian armed forces.

German Leopard 1A5 MBT Main Battle Tank


The Leopard 1A5 is a main battle tank developed and used by Germany, representing an upgraded version of the original Leopard 1 tank. This variant was first introduced in the mid-1980s, featuring significant improvements in terms of firepower, protection, and control systems.

The Leopard 1A5's firepower is primarily provided by its 105mm rifled gun, which can engage targets effectively at extended ranges. It is also equipped with a secondary armament that includes a 7.62mm machine gun.

German IRIS-T SLM air defense missile system.


The IRIS-T SLM (Surface Launched Medium Range) is a ground-based air defense system developed by Diehl Defence, a German company. It's an extended version of the IRIS-T air-to-air missile, which has been adapted for launching from the ground to provide medium-range air defense capabilities.

The IRIS-T SLM can effectively engage a broad spectrum of airborne targets, including aircraft, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and certain types of precision-guided munitions.As a medium-range air defense system, the IRIS-T SLM can engage targets at distances up to several tens of kilometers.

German Marder tracked armored IFV Infantry Fighting Vehicle


The Marder 1A3 is an advanced version of the Marder Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV), developed and used by Germany. It's known for its improved protection and armament capabilities compared to its predecessors.

The primary armament of the Marder 1A3 is the 20mm Rheinmetall MK 20 Rh202 autocannon, capable of firing a range of ammunition types at a high rate of fire. This autocannon is effective against various targets, including lightly armored vehicles, helicopters, and infantry.

Additionally, the Marder 1A3 is equipped with a 7.62mm MG3 machine gun as secondary armament and an anti-tank guided missile launcher. The launcher typically carries MILAN missiles, which are effective against heavily armored tanks at a range of up to 2 kilometers.

The Marder 1A3 also features enhanced armor protection compared to previous models, with additional armor plating to protect against anti-tank weapons. Despite these enhancements, the vehicle retains its amphibious capabilities, allowing it to cross bodies of water without the need for additional equipment.

Gepard mobile 35mm self-propelled anti-aircraft air defense system.


The Flugabwehrkanonenpanzer Gepard, commonly known as the Gepard, is a self-propelled anti-aircraft gun (SPAAG) that was developed by Germany in the 1960s and 70s. Its primary purpose is to provide mobile air defense for ground forces against low-flying aircraft and helicopters.

The Gepard's main armament consists of twin 35mm Oerlikon KDA autocannons, which can fire a wide range of ammunition types at high rates, allowing it to effectively engage airborne targets. The automatic cannons are complemented by advanced radar and fire control systems, which provide target detection, tracking, and engagement capabilities.
