Denmark's new $928 Million aid package to Ukraine.

| 2023

On September 17, 2023, Denmark's Ministry of Defense announced its most substantial financial commitment to Ukraine thus far, amounting to DKK 5.8 billion (approximately 928 million USD). This aid package, the twelfth and largest from Denmark since the invasion, is designed to significantly enhance Ukraine's military capabilities by supplying tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, specialized tank ammunition, and anti-aircraft guns.

Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen confirmed that the country will donate 45 tanks to Ukraine. This includes 30 Leopard 1A5 tanks and 15 T-72 tanks. In addition to tanks, Denmark also supplies a large amount of ammunition: 105mm shells for Leopard 1A5 tanks and 125mm shells for T-72 tanks.

Notably, Denmark, in collaboration with the Netherlands and Germany, launched a project in early February 2023 to refurbish a large number of Leopard 1A5 tanks, as Army Recognition reported on March 12, 2023. The German company FFG (Flensburger Fahrzeugbau Gesellschaft mbH) is actively involved in this refurbishment. It appears that this is the first concrete realization of this project.

But the aid doesn't stop with tanks and ammunition. The package is completed with additional equipment such as mine clearance hoses, 40mm grenade launchers and ammunition, pistols, hand grenades, thermal binoculars, and 10 aeromedical evacuation kits.

While the latest donation is immediate and substantial, Denmark has also made long-term commitments to Ukraine. For example, 19 F-16A/B fighter jets are scheduled for delivery starting in 2024. These are promises of future aid and should be distinguished from what has already been delivered.

In the past, Denmark has provided various forms of military support, including coastal defense missile systems like the AGM-84 Harpoon systems delivered in June 2022. Self-propelled artillery, such as 19 Caesar 8x8 155mm self-propelled guns, was sent in April 2023. In addition, 54 M113G3DK/G4DK armored personnel carriers were delivered in July and August 2022. Various vehicles and engineering equipment were also sent or are planned to be delivered.
