Russia has confirmed its decision to deliver S-300 air defense missile systems to Iran.
According France-Press agency, Russia on Tuesday, May 26, 2015, confirmed its decision to deliver S-300 air defense missile systems to Iran. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian openly told Iranian state-run news agencies the deal was a “success” and the system would soon be delivered.

Following Monday’s talks, Russia confirmed it had indeed decided to delivering its S-300 air defense missile system to Iran. But the Kremlin was decidedly vague on a date.

The decision on delivering S-300 to Iran has been taken but the realization of the project will take some time. As I understand, the time of delivery has not come yet,” the deputy head of the Russian Security Council, Yevgeny Lukyanov.

Moscow had banned the delivery in 2010 under the pretext that the agreement was covered by the fourth round of the United Nations Security Council sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program. On April 13, 2015, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a presidential decree, paving the way for the delivery of the missile system to Iran.

The S-300 is a family of surface-to-air defense missile system designed and manufactured in Russia by the Company NPO Almaz. The S-300 system was developed to defend against aircraft and cruise missiles for the Soviet Air Defence Forces.

The S-300PMU-2 Favorite (NATO Code name SA-20B), introduced in 1997, is an upgrade to the S-300PMU-1 with range extended once again to 195 km with the introduction of the 48N6E2 missile. This system can be used against short range ballistic missiles, but also medium range tactical ballistic missiles. It uses the 83M6E2 command and control system, consisting of the 54K6E2 command post vehicle and the 64N6E2 surveillance/detection radar. It employs the 30N6E2 fire control/illumination and guidance radar.
