During the UMEX 2024 exhibition, Belarus showcased a significant advancement in its military technology with the Sapphire MSU grenade launcher system.

Previously, Belarusian Prime Minister Golovchenko himself took part in testing the Sapphire prototype at a training ground in the Minsk Region, a demonstration underscoring the importance of this new weapon in the Belarusian arsenal. Following the successful tests, the Prime Minister announced that the weapon would soon proceed to research trials, the precursors to its official service integration.

What sets the Sapphire MGU grenade launcher apart is its design and capabilities. Described by Golovchenko as a leap forward and "the weapon of the future," the system includes a transport and launch container with a grenade, an autonomous launch device, and an additional fire control device. Its developers have highlighted several aspects in which the Sapphire is said to surpass its competitors: a versatile tandem warhead, a robust transport and launch container, and grenades made from composite materials. Additionally, the system's programmable electronic fuse allows for multiple modes of operation, including contact, assault, and detonation along a trajectory.

The launcher's engine is another distinguishing feature, designed for firing even from enclosed spaces. With a caliber of 61mm, the Sapphire can effectively engage targets up to 0.5 km away, and its maximum firing range is 1 km. The weapon's versatility is further demonstrated by its ability to penetrate various materials, from reinforced concrete and brick walls to steel armor, and its fragmentation effect can neutralize personnel within a 7-meter radius, even those wearing personal body armor.

Roman Golovchenko emphasized the launcher's precision, thanks to the Belarusian fire control device, and highlighted its export potential. Following the successful testing phase, plans are underway for testing with troops, moving towards mass production.

Dmitry Pantus, the Chairman of the State Authority for Military Industry, outlined the production schedule. Mass production is expected to start next summer, with an initial goal of producing 1,500 units, eventually increasing to 3,000 units annually. This ambitious production schedule reflects confidence in the Sapphire's capabilities and its potential appeal in the global arms market.

A notable feature of the system presented at UMEX 2024 is that it can be mounted on a vehicle, adding to its versatility. However, there are reservations about the capabilities presented by Belarus; it remains to be seen how the system performs in tests by a third country and its potential adoption by clients.

The unveiling of the Sapphire MSU grenade launcher system at the UMEX 2024 exhibition marks a major milestone in the development of Belarusian military technology. Its advanced features, combined with its anticipated export potential, position Belarus as an emerging player in the international defense industry.
