"The helicopters, which landed at the Machulishchi airfield, are the second batch under the contract for 12 Mi-8MTV-5 military helicopters, awarded to the Russian Helicopters Corporation during the Army 2015 International Military-Technical Forum," the press release says.

Minsk said the contract executed in a timely manner "is a good example of the close military-technical cooperation between Belarus and Russia in the interest of the military security of the Union State and the implementation of joint decisions pertinent to the operation of and improvement in the Belarusian-Russian Combined Regional Air Defense System."

The Belarusian Defense Ministry noted that the Mi-8MTV-5s carried up-to-date flight, navigation and radio communication suites, special night-vision equipment and a parachuteless landing system, enabling them to accomplish both tactical and cargo carriage missions. In order to increase the internal volume of the type, the fuselage has been upgraded heavily and the number of seats has grown by one-third, enabling the aircraft to air-land 35 troops or carry 12 casualties accompanied by medics.

"The fielding of six advanced aircraft more will facilitate the combat training of helicopter crews and boost the ability of the air base to defend the airspace of the Republic of Belarus," the Belarusian Defense Ministry said, adding that the flying and ground crews had completed the conversion course in Russia.

The first six machines were delivered to Belarus in November 2016.
