Russian Uragan MLRS crews use Orlan-10 UAVs for target reconnaissance

Reconnaissance units and crews of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) of the Central Military District’s 41st Combined-Arms Army have supported crews of Uragan multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS) in attacking a simulated enemy’s rear targets and a convoy of ammunition trucks during an exercise, the Defense Ministry’s press office said. The maneuvers took place at the Yurga training range in the Kemerovo Region in western Siberia.

The maneuvers involved more than 500 servicemen and about 40 items of military and special hardware. "While operating within a unified reconnaissance/engagement force, the crews of Uragan MLRS were assigned a task to hit targets at distances ranging between 8 kilometers [5 miles] and 20 kilometers [12.4 miles]. The targets simulated ammunition trucks and a logistics support facility of the notional enemy," the press office said. "Orlan-10 unmanned aerial vehicles and Fara flash-ranging stations were used for target acquisition and reconnaissance. The coordinates of the simulated enemy were transmitted to the artillery fire command and control post with the use of a Strelets reconnaissance, command, control and communication system," the press office said.

The Orlan-10 system made it possible to assess target engagement and adjust fire.
