In order to respond to new threats, AM General has developed armored versions of its HUMVEE to meet the new tactical needs of the American army but also to offer better protection against ballistic and mine threats such as IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices).
With the HUMVEE Saber, AM General has completely redesigned its HUMVEE vehicle to increase survivability with 360-degree kinetic and blast protection in a true light tactical vehicle.
The HUMVEE Saber is based on AM General 13-Series HMMWV 4x4 chassis. The general layout of the vehicle is standard for a light tactical armored vehicle with a powerpack at the front, crew and troops compartment in the middle and a cargo area at the rear. The vehicle is powered by a 6.5L V8 turbocharged diesel engine developing 205 hp coupled to a 4-speed electronically controlled transmission. The vehicle can reach a road speed of up to 90 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 402 km.
The HUMVEE Sabre provides 360° of kinetic and glass protection, including under-vehicle blast protection for the front and rear wheels as well as the center undercarriage. The vehicle can accommodate up to six military personnel. Each side of the vehicle is equipped with two doors that open to the front but -the rear doors are equipped with shielding instead of conventional windows and the outside view is ensured thanks to the use of cameras. The digital video camera delivers a 60°-120° field of view live feed of the outside environment to a ruggedized low-latency high definition LED display on the inside of the vehicle at the passenger’s position and to the commander’s display. This design eliminates the need for heavy transparent armor on rear passenger doors.

At Eurosatory 2022, the American company AM General in collaboration with the British Company Supacat also presents a new generation of wheeled 105mm self-propelled light gun based on the HMT (High Mobility Transporter) Extenda MK2 6x6 tactical vehicle equipped with a 105mm Light Gun Barrel and the AM General/Mandus Soft Recoil System.
The HMT Extenda MK2 showcases the flexibility of the AM General /Mandus SRT and its ability to convert existing light vehicle platforms into self-propelled howitzer systems.
The HMT Extenda is a high-mobility 6x6 tactical vehicle developed by the British company Supacat to meet the requirements of Special Forces. The vehicle is based on an open-top architecture design with a modular hull that can be easily reconfigured to conduct a wide range of missions.
The layout of the HMT Extenda Mk2 has been slightly modified to offer a flat bed area offering the integration of a 105mm lightweight gun containing AM General Soft Recoil Technology (SRT), transforming the vehicle into a more lethal mobile artillery weapons system. Mounting the 105mm gun with SRT onto the vehicle allows for "shoot and scoot" capability – it can quickly deploy, fire, and displace, increasing survivability from counter-battery fire.
The HMT Extenda is powered by a Cummins 6.7L, six-cylinder diesel engine developing 180 hp coupled to a five-speed automatic transmission. The vehicle can run at a maximum road speed of 120 km/h with a maximum road range of 800 km.
