The T-72 is a Soviet-made Main Battle Bank (MBT) that was designed Morozov Design Bureau, based at the Ural Tank Plant in Nizhny Tagil, a city in Sverdlovsk Oblast, Russia, located 25 kilometers (16 mi) east of the boundary between Asia and Europe.

The T-72 MBT entered in production in 1974 with the tank becoming fully operational by 1975. It was unveiled for the time to the public in 1977. Russian industry has continued to develop and modernize the T-72 over the past 20 years and the most popular variant in service today is the T-72A, called T-72M1 for the export variant.

The T-72A has many new improvements including a TPD-K1 laser range-finder sight that improves first-round hit probability, TPN-3-49 gunner's night sight, TPN-3 searchlight, side skirts, 125 mm 2A46 gun (earlier versions had 2A26M), Type 902B 81 mm smoke grenade launcher system, napalm protection system, turn signals, TVNE-4B driver night observation device, upgraded suspension for improved cross-country mobility and installation of a V-46-6 diesel engine.
