Deftech of Malaysia unveils new AV8 Gempita ATGW Anti-Tank Guided Weapon armored vehicle
DRB-HICOM Defence Technologies Sdn Bhd (DEFTECH) of Malaysia unveils its latest and most lethal Armoured Wheeled Vehicle AV8 Gempita variant, the Anti Tank Guided Weapon (ATGW). The AV8 Gempita ATGW is on display at the 16th Defence Services Asia Exhibition and Conference, Defence Services Asia 2016 (DSA 2016), at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC), from 18 - 21 April 2016.

The ATGW is one of the 12 variants of Armoured Wheeled Vehicle AV8 Gempita DEFTECH is delivering to the Malaysian Army under the contract awarded in 2012, to design, develop and manufacture 257 units of Armoured Wheeled Vehicle AV8. DEFTECH had delivered the first 12 units of the first variant of the Armoured Wheeled Vehicle AV8 Gempita to the Malaysian Army, in 2014, and a further 16 units were delivered in 2015.

The AV8 Gempita ATGW is based on the Two-Man Light Combat Turret 30 mra Cannon (LCT30) from Denel of South Africa and at the heart of the ATGW is the INGWE (Leopard in Zulu) Missile, with 30mm cannon as a main weapon and 7.62mm Co-Axial GPMG as a secondary weapon system INGWE missile is a state of the art guided munition that uses laser beam riding, providing the Armoured Fighting Vehicle-ATGW (AFV-ATGW) variant with a precision strike capability This weapon system features High Explosive Anti-Tank (HEAT), with tandem charge to defeat any form of reactive armour and effective in destroying up to 900 mm of armour protection. The INGWE missile is also extremely stealthy and highly resistance to countermeasures.

Lt Kol (K) Dato Amril Samsudin, Group Chief Executive Officer of DEFTECH said. "The Malaysian Army will be equipped with 54 units of the ATGW variants to be employed by both the Armoured Regiment and Mechanized Infantry Units. This weapon system will provide both units with an organic offensive capability to defeat any aggressor tank or armoured formations. AV8-ATGW variant will be the most sophisticated system in the Malaysian Army inventory and set to transform the dynamics of modern battle".
