MSPO 2023: WZL-2 showcases DragonFly loitering munition.

During the MSPO 2023 expo, the DragonFly loitering munition was unveiled to the public. The rise of drone and loitering munition usage in Ukraine has sparked significant interest in UAVs from armies around the world, making it unsurprising to see DragonFly featured at the Polish expo.

Developed as a new line of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for military applications, DragonFly is gaining traction among various armies globally. The system is a quadcopter with vertical take-off and landing capabilities, designed to operate in both open and urbanized areas.

One of DragonFly's features is its versatility in warhead options. Operators can choose from fragmentation, cumulative, thermobaric, or training warheads. These warheads can be further customized with either a daytime or infrared camera, allowing for operations in low-light conditions or at night.

DragonFly has a maximum take-off weight of 5 kg and can reach speeds of up to 80 km/h. It operates at a maximum altitude of 487 meters and has a line-of-sight control limit of 10 km. The system can stay airborne for up to 25 minutes.

Safety is a paramount concern when deploying any form of munition. DragonFly addresses this by incorporating a three-step system for remote arming and disarming of the warhead. This ensures that the munition can be safely controlled throughout its flight. Moreover, the system is designed to continue its mission even if communication is lost after a target has been located and video-tracking mode has been activated.

The entire DragonFly system, including its rotor span of 70 cm once assembled, can be carried by a single soldier in a backpack. This makes it highly portable and ideal for special forces operations. Tomasz Gugala, the director of the remotely piloted air system program, mentioned that the system is close to launching mass production for the Polish military forces.
