The agreement, formalized during the visit of the Korean President to the United Kingdom, paves the way for collaborative business development. Initially, the partnership will focus on opportunities in the conventional submarine sector.

This alliance leverages Babcock's experience in supporting defense programs in various countries, including Canada and Poland. The company's expertise in Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) will complement Hanwha Aerospace's knowledge of aerospace and defense equipment.

David Lockwood, CEO of Babcock, expressed his excitement about the partnership. "It's an exciting venture that will see our organizations combine complementary skills and expertise to forge innovative solutions for our current and future customers around the world," he stated.

Echoing this sentiment, Jae-il Son, President and CEO of Hanwha Aerospace, highlighted the MoU as a deepening of the already strong defense relationship between Korea and the UK. He anticipates that the partnership will enhance product offerings and provide exceptional value to customers worldwide.

Babcock's ongoing collaboration with Hanwha in the Korean submarine program and the existing relationship with Hanwha Ocean on international projects, including those in Poland and the Philippines, solidify the foundation of this new alliance.

Furthermore, in June 2023, Babcock Canada and Hanwha Ocean signed a Technical Cooperation Agreement. This agreement facilitates a mutual exchange of capabilities in shipbuilding and submarine sustainment, supporting both the CPSP and the Victoria In-Service Support Contract (VISSC), marking another significant step in their collaborative journey.

Thus, this strategic partnership between Babcock International and Hanwha Aerospace is of great interest to the global defense industry. However, the exact details of the agreement (beyond the collaboration on submarines) and its long-term benefits for both companies remain to be seen.
