For this new military program, the Brazilian army would like to acquire 221 8x8 armored vehicles armed with one 105mm cannon and to replace EE-11 Urutu 6x6 armored vehicles in service with the Brazilian Army with a new combat vehicle.
According to the military balance 220, The Brazilian army has a total of 408 EE-9 Cascavel 8x8 armored vehicles armed with one 90mm cannon and 223 EE-11 Urutu a 6x6 APC (Armored Personnel Carrier) vehicles.
The EE-9 Cascavel is a 6x6 armored vehicle that was designed by the Brazilian company Engensa to meet the requirements of the Brazilian Army. The vehicle entered into service with the Brazilian army in 1974.
The EE9- Cascavel is fitted with a two-man turret armed with one 90mm cannon able to fire HE, HEAT, HESH, Smoke White Phosphorus (Smoke WP-T), and HEAT Target Practice ammunition. A 7.62 mm machine gun is mounted to the left of the 90 mm main armament and a similar weapon, or a 12.7 mm (0.50) Browning M2 HB machine gun, can be mounted on the turret roof for anti-aircraft defense.
The EE-9 Cascavel was exported to many countries and is already in service with Bolivia, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Burma, Colombia, Cyprus, Congo RDC, Ecuador, Gabon, Ghana, Guyana, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Morocco, Nigeria, Paraguay, Qatar, Suriname, Tunisia, Uruguay, Venezuela, and Zimbabwe.
The EE-11 Urutu is a 6x6 armored vehicle personnel carrier (APC) that was also manufactured by the Brazilian company Engensa. The production of the vehicle started in 1974 and entered service in with the Brazilian army in 1975.
The hull of the EE-11 Urutu is of all-welded steel armor construction and provides protection against the firing of small arms and artillery shell splinters. The driver sits at the front of the hull on the left side with the engine on its right. The troop compartment is at the rear of the hull and can accommodate up to 12 military personnel. Bench seats are provided down each side of the vehicle with an additional bench seat behind the driver's seat across the troop compartment. There are two doors in the hull, one on the left side immediately behind the front axle and one at the back, which is hinged on the left side. The rear door is automatically operated by the driver.
The EE-11 Urutu is fitted with a ring-mounted station mounted on the roof at the front of the hull that can be armed with one 7.62 or 12.7mm machine gun.
