In February 2022, Nexter Systems was awarded a contract by the French government valued at 681 million Euros for the CAESAR NG artillery system. Marketed by the company as the CAESAR Mark II (also commonly referred to as CAESAR NG in France), 109 systems are to be delivered to the French Army between 2026 to 2030.

In May 2022, Belgium signed a contract with France for the acquisition of nine CAESAR NG 155mm 6x6 self-propelled howitzers for an amount of €62 million. This contract includes communication and information systems (CIS), equipment, and software necessary for integrating the howitzer into an interconnected network, as well as training materials.

This first contract was followed by a new order in December 2023 for an additional batch of 19 CAESAR Mk II howitzers. Belgian Defense Minister Ludivine Dedonder had previously expanded this partnership in 2022, with the purchase of 9 CAESAR NG long-range precision artillery systems. These systems, scheduled for delivery in 2027, represent a key component of the Belgian military’s modernization efforts.

The CAESAR NG marks a significant advancement over its predecessor in terms of development, design, and capabilities, reflecting the evolving needs of modern warfare. The Next Generation model has been meticulously developed to offer enhanced protection, superior mobility, and increased firepower, making it a formidable asset on the battlefield in terms of artillery capabilities.

In terms of protection, the CAESAR NG introduces a major upgrade with its improved armored cabin. This design enhancement ensures that the crew is better protected against a variety of threats such as improvised explosive devices (IEDs), mines, small arms fire, and artillery shrapnel. The focus on crew safety is a response to the changing dynamics of modern conflicts, where asymmetric warfare and the threat of ambushes are prevalent.

Mobility is another key area where the CAESAR NG outperforms its predecessor. Equipped with a new 6x6 truck chassis, an automatic gearbox, and a 460 HP engine, the CAESAR NG offers exceptional off-road capability. This enables rapid redeployment and operational flexibility across diverse terrains, an essential feature for evading counter-battery fire and maneuvering in challenging environments. The system's strategic mobility is complemented by its ability to be transported by military aircraft such as the C130 Hercules and A400M Atlas, facilitating quick deployment to various theaters of operation.

When it comes to firepower, the CAESAR NG maintains the high standards set by the original model, capable of delivering 155mm artillery shells to targets up to 40 kilometers away with standard ammunition. However, it also incorporates improvements in its firing systems and is designed to be compatible with future precision ammunition. This ensures that the CAESAR NG can engage a wide range of targets with enhanced accuracy and effectiveness, adapting to the requirements of future battlefields.

Comparatively, the transition from the original CAESAR system to the NG model represents a holistic enhancement across key performance areas. The CAESAR NG's improved protection measures address the increased risks faced by artillery units in contemporary warfare scenarios. Its enhanced mobility ensures that the system can swiftly respond to operational demands, providing support where it is most needed. Furthermore, its upgraded firepower capabilities ensure that the CAESAR NG remains a critical tool for achieving battlefield superiority, capable of delivering precise and effective fire support in a variety of combat situations.
