Selected through a competitive procurement process, Saab's RBS 70 NG system was identified as the optimal solution to fulfill the urgent operational needs outlined in Canada’s Soldier Portable Air Defence System Program. This initiative underscores a pivotal enhancement in air defense for the Canadian Armed Forces, particularly emphasizing support for their Enhanced Forward Presence in Latvia.

Micael Johansson, President and CEO of Saab, expressed satisfaction in providing what he described as a "proven and efficient air defense solution" at a time when such capabilities are increasingly crucial. The RBS 70 NG system is noted for its unjammable laser-beam guidance and sophisticated auto-tracking features, ensuring a reliable defense against aerial threats.

Saab’s commitment extends beyond the delivery of technology; it also includes generating Canadian content through collaboration with local offices and Canada-based partners and suppliers. This approach not only strengthens Canada's defense infrastructure but also supports domestic industry and innovation.

The RBS 70 NG system enjoys a reputation for effectiveness and reliability, with a diverse global user base including countries like Brazil, the Czech Republic, and Latvia. Canada's adoption of this technology signifies a significant step forward in enhancing its short-range air defense capability, ensuring preparedness and protection against contemporary and future aerial threats.

The RBS 70 NG (New Generation) is a man-portable air-defense system (MANPADS) developed by Swedish defense company Saab, engineered to equip ground forces with a formidable shield against a wide array of aerial threats such as fighter jets, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and other airborne assets. Central to its operational excellence is the laser beam-riding guidance system, which grants the RBS 70 NG immunity to electronic countermeasures by maintaining missile alignment with the target through a laser beam. This precision targeting is further enhanced by an automatic target tracking feature, streamlining the engagement process and elevating hit accuracy. The inclusion of an unjammable guidance system ensures the RBS 70 NG's effectiveness even in the most challenging electronic warfare scenarios.

Designed for flexibility and operational efficiency, the RBS 70 NG boasts a significant engagement envelope, capable of intercepting targets up to 9 kilometers away and at altitudes up to 5,000 meters. This capability ensures coverage of both low and medium-altitude threats, offering a comprehensive air defense solution. The system's portability, coupled with an integrated sighting mechanism that supports night operations, allows for deployment across diverse terrains and conditions, ensuring round-the-clock readiness. The missile's velocity, achieving speeds up to Mach 2, allows for swift engagement of targets, minimizing the window of threat. The RBS 70 NG's modular architecture not only facilitates seamless integration with various air defense networks but also ensures that the system can be upgraded to meet evolving threats and technological advancements, solidifying its role as a key asset in modern air defence arsenals worldwide.
