"At 01.29 hours Moscow time on April 12, 2016, a Russian Aerospace Force Mi-28N helicopter crashed near the city of Homs in the Syrian Arab Republic. Its two crewmen died in the crash," the ministry says in a press release available to TASS.

"According to a report from the crash site, the helicopter had not been fired on before it crashed," the message says.

The Defense Ministry added that the bodies of the pilots had been recovered in a search-and-rescue operation and brought to Khmeimim air base.

"An investigation team is working on site to find out the cause of the accident," the news release says.

The Mi-28N attack helicopter, which crashed in Syria, is assigned to Budyonnovsk air base in the Stavropol Territory, a ranking defense industry official has told TASS.

"The machine is from Budyonnovsk," he said.

The Russian military used Mi-28N attack helicopters during the liberation of Palmyra. In particular, the rotorcraft employed their antitank guided missiles to eliminate armored wheeled vehicles of the terrorists.
