DSEI 2025: FN Herstal EVOLYS offers ultra light machine gun for infantry units and Special Forces.

The EVOLYS is FN Herstal’s newest generation of ultralight machine guns, designed in both 5.56×45 mm and 7.62×51 mm NATO calibres to answer a critical demand from modern armed forces: combining the firepower of a belt-fed weapon with the mobility and ergonomics of an assault rifle. By reducing weight, simplifying handling, and integrating features long requested by operators, the EVOLYS directly addresses the challenges faced by infantry and special operations units operating in dispersed, mobile, and urban environments.

At just 5.5 kg in its 5.56mm caliber configuration and a little over 6.2 kg in 7.62mm caliber, the EVOLYS is nearly one-third lighter than legacy systems such as the Minimi. This drastic reduction means soldiers can move faster, carry more ammunition, and maintain suppressive fire without the fatigue that has historically limited combat effectiveness. The weapon incorporates a patented side-opening feed tray that allows continuous use of optics on a single uninterrupted top rail, a solution to the long-standing problem of zero shift during reloads.

FN Herstal has also introduced a hybrid firing mode. While the weapon is belt-fed and capable of sustained automatic fire, it can also be switched to semi-automatic with rifle-like precision. This dual capability ensures a single system can suppress enemy positions or deliver accurate, controlled shots in complex urban combat. The entire design has been optimized for suppressor use, integrating reinforced gas regulation and tailored muzzle devices to reduce both sound and flash signatures, an increasingly vital requirement for special operations and counterterrorism missions.

Ergonomics were central in the design process. EVOLYS features fully ambidextrous controls, an adjustable folding stock, and multiple M-LOK interfaces for accessories. The charging handle, fire selector, and safety are mirrored on both sides, providing equal functionality for left- and right-handed shooters. A tool-free quick-change barrel system supports sustained fire during prolonged engagements, while the use of advanced polymers and additive manufacturing reduces weight without compromising durability under high firing cycles.

For modern infantry units, the EVOLYS offers greater tactical flexibility by eliminating the trade-off between heavy suppression and mobility. Dismounted squads can now carry a weapon that ensures continuous high-volume fire while remaining light enough to maneuver in complex terrain such as urban centers, mountainous areas, or dense forests. Its compatibility with suppressors, advanced optics, and accessories makes it fully integrated into today’s networked battlefield, where reduced signatures and rapid reaction are critical.

For Special Forces, EVOLYS provides a tailored solution to missions where speed, precision, and versatility determine success. The weapon’s lightweight frame allows operators to remain agile during air assault insertions, maritime boarding, or close-quarter raids. The ability to shift instantly between suppressive automatic fire and accurate semi-automatic engagement allows Special Forces to adapt quickly when transitioning from open combat to hostage rescue or surgical strike operations. Its design supports long-duration missions where reduced weight directly translates into lower soldier fatigue and increased endurance.

The program responds to a capability gap that has existed for decades. Infantry squads often faced a difficult trade-off between lighter 5.56 mm weapons with limited range and heavier 7.62 mm platforms that slowed mobility. By offering ultralight designs in both calibres, EVOLYS provides commanders with the flexibility to adapt squad firepower to mission profiles. The 7.62 variant in particular offers long-range suppression and increased lethality against peer adversaries without the excessive burden of older machine guns.

By merging precision, fire volume, and soldier-focused ergonomics, FN Herstal EVOLYS ultra-light machine gun marks a significant evolution in light machine gun design. It reflects FN Herstal’s answer to the operational needs of 21st century conflict, where infantry must be both highly mobile and fully lethal, and where Special Forces require adaptable weapons to operate effectively across the full spectrum of modern warfare.
