The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) and Rodong Sinmun reported North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s attendance at a test firing of the system on Thursday, March 3, 2016, which was detected by the South Korean military.

The first visual confirmation of the weapon system’s existence appeared on October 10, 2015, in footage and photographs of the parade held in Pyongyang for the 70th anniversary of the foundation for the Workers’ Party of Korea.

In pictures published by North Korean state media, the vehicle used in the MRLS artillery battery has the bodywork and markings of a Chinese-made Sinotruk (China National Heavy Duty Truck Group Company Limited) 6x6 truck model ZZ2257N5857A, which is widely available commercially and is used by North Korea in its mining and construction industries.

At the parade 2015, the new 300mm MLRS was fitted with two rows of four launch tubes each, but the pictures release during the firing test showed that there are still eight launch tubes, but they now appear to be contained in two pods of four tubes each.

The cab of the truck now features armored louvers to protect the windshield from the rocket blast during launches. The crew compartment accommodates the launch preparation and firing equipment and the operator can select single rockets or salvo firing.

According Joseph Dempsey of the International Institute for Strategic Studies, the rocket of the new 300mm MLRS seems visually similar to the Chinese-made SY300 which is a guided rocket with GPS/INS guidance system. This type of rocket can be fitted with a full range of warheads, as blast fragmentation warhead, fuel air explosive warhead, blast fragmentation combustion warhead or anti-armour fragment cluster warhead. The Chinese SY300 guided rocket has a range from 40 to 130 km with a firing accuracy of 250m (INS) and 50m (INS+GNSS).
