New Turkish SUNGUR air defense missile system will enter soon in service.

According to a Tweet released by SSB Turkish Presidency of Defence Industries on July 1, 2020, the new SUNGUR turret-mounted short-range air defense missile system will enter soon in service with the Turkish armed forces.

A video was released on the Twitter account of Ismail Demir, the President of the Turkish Defense Association (SSB) showing the air defense turret SUNGUR mounted on the roof of the Vuran 4x4 armored vehicle manufactured by the Turkish Company BMC.

The SUNGUR is a new short-range air defense missile system fitted with 4 launchers for PORSAV missiles able to destroy cruise missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles, low-flying fixed-wing aircraft, and helicopters. According to Turkish defense industry sources, the system can be used on the move during day and night. The turret is also equipped with optronics to detect, diagnose, identify, and track air targets.

The PORSAV is a missile jointly developed by the Turkish companies ASELSAN and Roketsan. The PORSAV can be also used as MANPADS (Man-portable air-defense systems), and will gradually replace the American FIM-92 Stinger which in service with the Turkish armed forces.

The PORSAV missile will be able to hit a target within 4 km at a maximum range of 6 km. Turkish specialists have created a new product based on the technology that American engineers used when creating HISAR and Stinger MANPADS. PorSav's main advantage is that it will use the Imager Infrared (IIR) Seeker Head instead of the Infrared (IR) Seeker Head, which is also used in the Stinger Missile. IR Guided Missiles can be easily deceived by countermeasure systems called "Flare" since they focus on the high heat emitting region. IIR Guided Missiles, on the other hand, are very difficult to be deceived by countermeasure systems since they are locked on the target thanks to the "viewer" system. It is estimated that an IIR Title similar to the IIR Title used in the HİSAR project will be used in the PorSav Missile.
