Mercedes' Actros 8x8 semitrailer tractor under IDEX 2017 spotlights
At the International Defence Exhibition and Conference IDEX 2017 from 19 to 23 February, Mercedes-Benz is presenting five vehicles and two chassis with payloads of between 0.7 t and 75 t on the joint German stand, Stand 09-A21. Among them, the Actros, which is designed to transport goods by road, off-road, on unpaved roads and under extreme climatic conditions and in rough situations.

The Actros ensures the necessary mobility to carry out logistical tasks. It is available with numerous engine variants and drive configurations, in combination with various variants of the Actros cab. The cabs can be produced as LHD or RHD variants.

The four-axle, all-wheel drive (8x8) all-terrain Mercedes-Benz Actros 4661 AS semitrailer tractor is based on the successful and proven volume-production series of the Actros, of which over 1.1 million vehicles are now in reliable service worldwide: in the transport industry as well as in ultra-heavy-duty construction site service, as a heavy-duty tractor unit and in logistical operations in over 50 countries worldwide.

With the Actros 4661 AS 8x8, Mercedes-Benz has set new standards for special-purpose vehicles for logistical operations. Optimum mobility on all surfaces, a high payload, ergonomic working conditions in the spacious cab as well as large-scale production quality with individualised configurations and the world-wide Mercedes-Benz service are its distinguishing features.

The 450 kW (612 hp) engine of the 502 series, the 16-speed Powershift transmission, permanent all-wheel drive with differential locks on all axles and also a semi-automatic tyre inflation system for the special sand tyres ensure good progress even when encountering adverse conditions en route. The Actros is used e.g. as a transport truck with a loading crane, as a heavy-duty recovery and towing vehicle, as a semitrailer tractor, as a skip loader (Palletised Loading System, PLS) and as a workshop vehicle with a rear-mounted crane.

In the Euro III version the powertrain is configured for operation on low-quality fuel, but it is also available as a Euro V variant. Optimum mobility is guaranteed by a VIAB turbo retarder clutch (TRK) and all-wheel drive, combined with lockable inter-axle and inter-wheel differentials, special sand tyres and also a tyre pressure control system. As such, the exhibited Actros is the ideal semitrailer tractor to meet the requirements of security and defence forces when it comes to transporting heavy loads between outposts and base camps or loading points.

The cab can be tilted forward, affording access to the engine compartment. This is optionally available in different sizes as well as with a roof hatch and appropriate standing area on the engine tunnel. The comfortable seating system with three-point seat belts provides an ideal basis for occupant protection and ensures support when driving off road and on the road. Alongside the powerful standard-fit air conditioning system, an additional particularly powerful roof-mounted air conditioning system ensures temperatures in which crews can continue to perform effectively in extreme climatic conditions.

Ergonomically positioned control panels allow the safe operation of differential locks, for example, even when negotiating difficult terrain. The rear-mounted dual cable winch system by Rotzler, with fully proportional electric control of the winch system and an additional cable extraction winch, assists with the ergonomic, low-effort transfer of heavy loads onto a trailer.
