SAIC delivers 1st Assault Amphibious Vehicle Survivability Upgrade to US Marine Corps

Science Applications International Corp. Assault Amphibious Vehicle Survivability Upgrade (AAV SU) to U.S. Marine Corpsannounced on March 11 that it delivered the first Base Quantico on March 4. Transported from SAIC’s integration facility in Charleston, South Carolina, this is the first of 10 landmark AAV SU vehicles scheduled to be delivered for testing to the Marine Corps by May 2016.

“Our employees and partners worked tirelessly to deliver this solution to the Marine Corps two months ahead of schedule,” said Tom Watson, SAIC senior vice president and general manager of the Navy and Marine Corps Customer Group. “We are honored to support the Marine Corps in this historic endeavor to upgrade vehicles that have not been significantly modernized in more than 30 years.”
Following the initial delivery of the AAV SU, the Marine Corps Program Executive Officer (PEO) Land Systems will have approximately 12 months to test and evaluate SAIC’s solution. SAIC is currently under contract with the Marine Corps to perform initial upgrades to 10 AAV SU prototypes. During the engineering and manufacturing development (EMD) phase, older AAV-P7 models were stripped down to the hull and rebuilt from the underbelly up with survivability upgrades. Subsequent to the EMD phase, additional options, if exercised, will lead to developmental testing and low rate initial production (LRIP) of the AAV SU vehicles. “SAIC’s solution is truly a game changer. We are providing Marines with a best-in-class redesigned vehicle that is forward thinking and unprecedented,” said Brion Cornette, SAIC AAV SU program manager. “SAIC, along with our teammates, are proud to have contributed to this momentous occasion.” SAIC has nine teammates, including hull manufacturer Demmer Corp. located in Lansing, Michigan. The Marine Corps will host an information session for members of the media to view the new AAV SU and discuss requirements, capabilities, upcoming testing, and the overall program status.
