The crew cabin is fitted with an armour kit to provide protection against firing of small arms 7.62mm caliber.

This new MLRS can be ready to fire in less than 35 seconds and can leave its firing position in 20 sec.

As the old BM-21, the BM-21 MARS is equipped with a bank of 40 launch tubes 122 mm arranged in a rectangular shape that can be turned away from the crew cabin. The rocket tube arrangement is a single rectangular bank of four layers each with 10 tubes.

The old BM-21 has a crew of 5 while the new BM-21 has a crew of 3. All the firing operations can be performed from inside the crew cabin. Standard equipment includes automatic aiming system, navigation system "Tuspal", navigation satellite system (GPS) Glonas and modern communication system with data transfer by wire or radio.

For its self-protection, the BM-21 MARS "GRAD" is armed with a 7.62mm machine gun mounted on the roof of the crew cabin.
