Russian army will train to use Buk-M3 air defence system and Iskander-M tactical missile

From June 1, 106 out of 726 air defense training centers will launch a three-month course to retrain a brigade of the Eastern Military District for Buk-M3 while units of the Southern Military District - for short-range Tor-M2 anti-aircraft missiles.

"After the training program in the air defense centers is completed an air defense formation and military unit of the Eastern and Southern Military Districts will march to the combat engagement center of the Ground Forces at Kapustin Yar range in Astrakhan region to train combat cohesion which will end with operational readiness exercise with Buk-M3 and Tor-M2," the ministry said.

The combat engagement training center of the missile and artillery units of the Ground Forces will continue retraining servicemen of the missile formation of the Eastern Military District to fire Iskander-M operational and tactical missiles which will end with a launch of the missile scheduled for late September," the ministry said.

Buk-M3 is a development of Buk-M2 missile. The characteristics of the new complex are unknown but the predecessor could hit air targets with hard-fuel missiles at a distance from 3 to 45 kilometers and at an altitude from 15 meters to 25 kilometers. It can also destroy ballistic missiles with a launch range of 150-200 kilometers. Head of the air defense of the Russian Ground Forces Lieutenant-General Alexander Leonov earlier said due to rearmament with Buk-M3 the previous Buk-M2 missiles will no longer be supplied to the Ground Forces.
