URAL of Russia has developed new 4x4 MRAP armoured vehicle Ural-53099 Taifun-U.
The URAL Automobile Works company has developed new 4x4 MRAP armored vehicle designated Ural-53099 Taifun-U according to a source in the company. "The 6x6 Taifun-U MRAP became the basic model to the 4x4 vehicle", the source said, pointing out, that the revealed at ARMY-2015 military exhibition Ural-53099 was "a mockup".

The Russian Ministry of Defense has already revealed its interest to the new 4x4 MRAP vehicle, the source informed. "We are expecting, that decisions to launch the Ural-53099 appropriate design and development works will be taken as early as 2016", he told TASS, saying, that the new vehicle is intended to complement the existing 6x6 Taifun-U. URAL also supposes to develop 8x8 Taifun-U modification. "As a result there will be created a whole family of new Russian MRAPs, consisting of three vehicles", the source said.

Taifun-U 4x4 MRAP is proposed to be equipped with a remote weapon station (RWS). The vehicle demonstrated at the ARMY-2015 exhibition was equipped with a new MBDU combat module developed by Kalashnikov. "There is an option", said the source, commenting the installation of MBDU on the MRAP. "The module structure of the vehicle allows integration of other RWSs, for the instance, of those produced by TSNII Burevestnik or JSC "Electromachina". This is an advantage of Ural-53099", he added.

Taifun-U 4x4 MRAP has the equivalent of Level III STANAG 4569 protection against 7.62 x 54 mm B-32 armour-piercing bullets fired from SVD sniper rifle or PKM machine gun. TASS understands, that this level can be increased. The source didn’t reveal the level of the vehicle’s blast protection.

Ural-53099`s gross weight is 16 t and the vehicle`s maximum speed is 100 km/h. It can tow 5t trailer. Taifun-U 4x4 is equipped with 440 h.p. YaMZ-5367 engine coupled with automatic transmission. The vehicles has crew of 3 members and can transport up to 8 soldiers.

URAL’s first MRAP vehicle, namely Ural-VV, was exhibited for the first time at Eurosatory-2012. It was based on Ural-4320 truck and intended to be used by Interior Ministry troops. The are no known serial supplies of the truck to the customers.

The 6x6 modification of Taifun-U participated in the Victory Day parade in Moscow as well as KAMAZ-63968 Taifun MRAP. Now both URAL and KAMAZ are developing the 4x4 modifications of their vehicles. URAL plans to launch the production of Taifun-U vehicles family in 2017, using only Russian-made components.
