Description
The FN-6 is a man-portable air defense missile system (MANPADS) designed and manufactured in China by the Defense Company Poly Technologies. It is a third generation passive infrared (IR) man portable air defense system. The FN-6 has the capability of all-direction attack and anti-infrared jamming. Featured with a fire-and-forget capability, the system is easy transport and use. The FN-6 is especially designed to engage low flying targets as fighter-bomber, helicopter and other aerial targets. Under the visual condition, by head-on and tail-chase attack (mainly head-on), the combat equipment can intercept the fighter, fighter-bomber, strike aircraft and armed helicopter whose speed is no more than 300m/s, maneuver overload is no more than 6 and the flight height is no more than 4000m. The combat equipment can also cooperate with other air defense equipment to protect the marching troops and important places. In order to meet the requirement of training operations and improve the operation effectiveness, the training devices of operation, aiming and firing and comprehensive test vehicle are available. There’s been ample video proof that Syrian rebels have received some Chinese FN-6.

Main Variants
- FN-6A: FN-6A is the vehicle mounted version of FN-6 first revealed to public in 2005. The system is based on a Chinese HMMWVS, 4x4 light tactical vehicle.
- QW-1: export version of FN-6

Launcher system
The FN-6 weapon system consists of combat equipment, testing cabin and training equipment. Combat equipment consists of HNT-6 missile-in-tube (MIT), ND-6 ground power/gas supply device (GPGSD), SK-6 launching mechanism (LM) and MG-6 optical aiming device (OAD). The optical aiming device or mechanical aiming device can be selected according to practical combat condition. The handle of the launcher houses the batteries and cooling system. An IFF (identification, friend or foe) antenna and an optional clip-on optical sight are fitted on to the launcher.
Missile
The FN-6 missile is equipped with a digital infrared seeker with a strong resistance to flares, solar heat and heat from the ground. The infra-red sensor has some ability to distinguish flares, solar heat and ground heat from the target, and is thought to have a 70% hit capability. The pyramid shaped nose of the missile houses the four unit infrared seeker. The complete FN-6 missile system weighs 17 kg. The missile is 1.495 m in length, and has a diameter of 71mm. The weight of the missile is 10.77 kg. The missile uses a single stage solid rocket motor, and can obtain a maximum speed of 360 m/s when flying head-on, and 300 m/s when tail chasing. The missile's operating range is from 500 m to 5,500 m, and its operating altitude is from 15 m to 3.8 km. The missile-borne battery is activated after the launching mechanism delivers the launching command. The ground power transfers to the missile-borne power 0.6s later. The fuse is power on. The missile-borne gas vessel is opened 0.15s later. The missile-block pin drops out 0.15s later. The launching motor ignites, and the missile begins moving forward. The missile guidance and control function are implemented by the guidance system. The four-element detector of the seeker receives the infrared signal of the target and forms an output signal, whose amplitude is direct proportional to the angular velocity of line-of-sight, and whose phase is consistent with the target azimuth. This signal is delivered to the autopilot to control the deflection of control surface and form control force. The missile flies to the target by proportional guidance law.
Operations
The FN-6 is operated by a two man team. Once a target is visually detected the assistant selects the launch site and removes end caps from the front and back of the launcher. The gunner then partially depresses the trigger, which activates the electronic battery and opens the coolant bottle, cooling the seeker to operating temperature. The gunner tracks the target visually, until the missile locks onto the target, indicating this with both a flashing light and an audio tone. The gunner then provides target lead and depresses the trigger all the way. This triggers the booster section of the missile, which projects the missile a safe distance away from the operator before the sustainer motor ignites. The missile is guided by proportional navigation to the approximate impact point, before switching to a terminal guidance mode that attempts to steer the missile to the most vulnerable point of the target.
Accessories
The FN-6 can be equipped with night vision equipment, and can also be equipped with IFF (identification, friend or foe) systems. When equipped with IFF system, the name is changed from FN-6 to FY-6.
