At MSPO 2016, the International Defence Industry Exhibition currently held in Kielce (Poland), local company Bumar (member of PGZ) and German company Rheinmetall are showcasing for the first time a Leopard 2 PL main battle tank (MBT) demonstrator (a company representative qualified it as "pre prototype").

The Leopard 2 PL is designed for target engagement from a stationary position and on the move, as well as for deployment by day and night. The 2 PL version is based on existing Leopard 2A4 MBTs in service with the Polish Army and fitted with additional armor and upgraded turret stabilization and fire suppression systems.

A Bumar representative explained that the main visual (and exterior) feature of the PL variant on display at MSPO compared to a regular Leopard 2A4 variant is the additional armor fitted at the front of the turret.

The Leopard 2A4 is a German-made main battle tank designed and manufactured by the Company Krauss-Maffei Wegmann, the successor of the main battle tank Leopard 1. The version Leopard 2A4 constitutes the basis of today’s Leopard-family.

The Polish Army operates 128 Leopard 2A4s and had an additional 14 Leopard 2A4s and 105 Leopard 2A5s on order in March 2013. The Polish Leopard 2 tanks serve with the 10th Armoured Cavalry Brigade based in Świętoszów. By November 2013, the Polish Defense Ministry had acquired 119 ex-German tanks (105 Leopard 2A5s and 14 2A4s). All acquired Leopard 2A4 tanks are to be upgraded to Leopard 2PL standard.
