The trials of the Enigma 8x8 armoured fighting vehicle (AFV) developed in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and equipped with Russian AU-220M Baikal combat module will be started in 2017. It was revealed by the Uralvagonzavod`s (Russian acronym: UVZ) Deputy Director for Military-Technocal Cooperation, Igor Kulikov. UAE-made Enigma 8x8 armoured vehicle fitted with BMP-3 turret at IDEX 2015, defense exhibition in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

"We are cooperating with the Emirates Defense Technologies company, preparing the Enigma demonstrator for trials in the UAE. The launch of trials is scheduled for 2017. We hope, that they will be finished successfully," Kulikov said at the DEFEXPO India-2016 defense show.

The Enigma is designed by the Emirates Defense Technology (EDT) to meet the requirement of UAE armed forces for a new wheeled armoured combat vehicle. A prototype of the Enigma 8x8 armoured fitted with a BMP-3 turret was unveiled for the first time at IDEX Defense exhibition in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates) in February 2015.

Previously, the UVZ`s Director General, Oleg Sienko said, that the trials of the AFV would start in 2016.

Enigma AFV has been developed by the Emirates Defense Technologies company. The vehicle incorporates Russian AU-200M Baikal remotely-controlled weapon station (RCWS) armed with 57mm naval gun (an analogue of European 40mm CTAS CT Cannon semi-automatic gun). Previously, the AU-220M RCWS was intended for Russian-French Atom infantry fighting vehicle. The Atom program was closed due to sanctions.

In 2015, a Russian defense industry source told TASS, that the Baikal RCWS would receive heavy anti-tank weapon, namely, 9M133 Kornet (NATO reporting name: AT-14 Spriggan) or 9M123 Khrisantema (AT-15 Springer) anti-tank guided missiles (ATGM)
