Burnie manufacturing company Elphinstone Group is part of a consortium, known as Team Sentinel, vying for the $10 billion Defence contract to replace up to 400 light-armoured combat vehicles.

Elphinstone would help build the hull and engine for the vehicles while CBG Systems in Hobart would add its stealth blanket technology.

Elbit Systems managing director Dan Webster said the next stage would be for the Army to select its preferred prototypes for further testing. A decision on the contract is expected in 2017.

The LAND 400 project for Australian will acquire and support the next generation of Armoured Fighting Vehicles (AFV) with the firepower, protection and mobility to defeat increasingly lethal and adaptive adversaries well into the future.

The project will deliver replacements for the Australian Light Armoured Vehicle (ASLAV) and M113 Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) fleets.

Part of the phase 3 is the procurement of a planned 450 medium-weight tracked vehicles, of which 312 will be fitted with a turret in an infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) configuration.
