Projekt System & Management GmbH (PSM) is a Joint Venture (50% stake each) of Opens external link in new windowKrauss-Maffei Wegmann GmbH und Co. KG (KMW) and Öffnet externen Link in neuem FensterRheinmetall Landsysteme GmbH (RLS), two of Europe´s leading manufacturers of armoured wheeled and tracked vehicles. PSM was established in 2002 with the objective of coordinating the development and production of the new Puma armoured infantry fighting vehicle for the German Army on the industry side.

The first Puma was entered in service with the German Army in April 2015. The AIFV PUMA is now in service with the German Bundeswehr for more than a year. The 342 ordered weapon systems PUMA will be delivered to the Panzergrenadier troops till 2020.

End of last year the German Army received its 100th PUMA Infantry Fighting Vehicle at the German Armour School in Munster.

The PUMA features a new two-level protection concept which able the vehicle in the light configuration to be transported by military transport aircraft A400M. The Puma can be easily upgraded with a modular armour kit to increase protection against heavy blast mines, explosive formed projectile (EFP) mines and anti-tank missiles.

Interfaces for active protection systems are already incorporated in the vehicle. Customized solutions of hardkill and softkill protection systems can be integrated without problems. For German Army the MUltifunctional Self protection System MUSS (a softkill protection system against guided missiles) is integrated into all PUMA.

The Puma is fitted with an unmanned turret which is armed with one automatic cannon 30 mm MK30-2 ABM. In addition to existing 30 mm full-caliber and sub-caliber fin-stabilized ammunition, it is also possible to fire the newly developed air burst ammunition with time fuses. Second armament includes a 7.62mm coaxial machine gun.

PUMA receives an additional weapon system with the integration of the Anti Armour/Multi-Purpose Missile System SPIKE, provided by EuroSpike. The integration of SPIKE boosts the PUMA’s lethality significantly.

The Puma AIFV has a crew of three including driver, commander and gunner, the rear part of the vehicle can carry a total of 6 infantrymen.
