This event marks the second successful use of the Arrow system since the onset of the current hostilities. The first interception occurred last week when a ballistic missile, fired from Yemen, was also headed for Eilat and was successfully neutralized by the Arrow defense.

The IDF's prompt response to the attack has been a testament to the effectiveness of the Arrow 3 system, which is designed to intercept ballistic missiles at high altitudes, providing a strategic defense against various aerial threats. The Arrow 3 system is a cornerstone of Israel's air defense setup, which includes other systems like Iron Dome, designed to counter short-range rockets and artillery shells, and David's Sling, which targets medium- to long-range rockets and cruise missiles.

The Arrow 3 air defense system is Israel's uppermost layer of its integrated missile defense shield, designed to intercept long-range ballistic missiles at high altitudes, well beyond the Earth's atmosphere. Its operational range is classified, but it is publicly acknowledged to be capable of intercepting threats over 100 kilometers (62 miles) away, with some reports suggesting it could be effective at ranges up to 2,400 kilometers (1,500 miles), though these figures are not officially confirmed. The system's ability to engage targets at such distances allows it to destroy incoming missiles closer to their launch sites, far from Israeli territory. The altitude of interception is one of the system's most impressive features; the Arrow 3 can intercept an incoming missile at an altitude exceeding 100 kilometers (over 62 miles), which is on the edge of space. This exo-atmospheric capability ensures that any destruction of the hostile missile occurs safely outside the Earth's atmosphere, minimizing the risk of debris fallout and the potential for collateral damage on the ground.

The Arrow 3's advanced radar and detection systems contribute to its high-altitude interception prowess. The system uses a sophisticated exo-atmospheric interceptor missile equipped with a homing device that can detect and lock onto a target in space. Once in the trajectory path of the incoming threat, the Arrow 3's interceptor uses its onboard sensors and propulsion system to adjust its course and speed with remarkable precision. This allows for a kinetic kill capability, which means the interceptor can destroy the incoming missile by colliding with it at high speeds, rather than relying on an explosive warhead.
