Helicampro from Italy presents its new HCP-M autonomous single-rotor drone at Eurosatory 2016.
At Eurosatory 2016, the Italian Company Helicampro presents its new HCP-M, an autonomous, internal combustion engine, single-rotor drone. It is an actual miniature helicopter, capable of performing flights entirely controlled by a computer.

Main features of the HCP-M are structural strength, mechanical reliability, efficiency and performance of flight, and above all a great payload for extended periods of time. In fact, the flight range is one of the fundamental differences compared to electric propulsion products. Therefore, it has various application fields in which to date conventional helicopters with pilot on board have been used resulting in disproportionate costs and operating risks. An example of these application fields includes the inspection of large oil pipelines or long electrical lines, long-distance transportation of parcels supporting civil protection and the continuous monitoring of oil platforms or industrial facilities.

The standard configuration, with a four-stroke 110 hp engine, has a payload over 15 kg with 1-hour flight time; obviously, the balance between fuel and payload can be modified, and up to 6 hours flight time can be obtained. This and any other application-specific customization can be fulfilled thanks to Helicampro's expertise that ranges from early-stage design to the final manufacturing and integration details.

The mechanics at the base of the Helicampro is designed to deliver continuous and constant workflows safely with a reduced need for maintenance. Metaphorically speaking, they have been nicknamed "flying tractors". For this purpose, all components are industrially produced with performance and reliability guaranteed for workloads by far higher than those to which they are subjected. This over sizing of all components has been possible thanks to the high power-to-weight ratio, for which we were willing and able to renounce a part of the payload during the design phase in order to achieve the highest levels of security.

The same swashplate is designed and built using 4 linkage points in order to allow the control also in case of failure of one of them. Another fundamental feature of the Helicampro system is that it is autonomous and» therefore, piloted by an autopilot. Also from this point of view, the mechanics has been improved: all backlashes have been eliminated in order to meet the high reaction times of the electronics, and all lever arms were calculated to ensure maximum control authority. Moreover, research efforts were focused on the study and elimination of vibrations. The sources were identified and improved through an analysis of the frequencies concerned and, finally, more suitable anti-vibration systems were adopted, which transformed the "vibration factory" into a friendly environment for the electronics.
