ERC-90 Sagaie

Light 6x6 reconnaissance / anti-tank armored vehicle - France

ERC 90 Sagaie 6x6 light reconnaissance anti tank armored vehicle France 925 001

Description

The ERC 90 Sagaie is a 6x6 light armored vehicle designed, developed, and manufactured from 1975 by the French Company Panhard, now a subdivision of Renault Trucks Defense. The company's AML 90, in addition to having conquered the world's markets, has shown the validity of its characteristics in various African and other conflicts that have seen it directly employed. On the basis of evaluation and the experience gained in all of these conflicts, and of the new requirements for wheeled armored vehicles, the French company felt it opportune not to build a totally new combat vehicle but rather to redesign and substantially improve that already well-known product. The French Army evaluated the ERC 90 F4 Sagaie between 1978-80 and accepted the vehicle in December 1980 although further trials, including hot weather trials in Djibouti in 1982. Panhard defines the ERC 90 Sagaie as an armored reconnaissance and anti-tank vehicle, with an accented capability to engage in combat with the vehicles of mechanized units and effect patrols and raids behind the enemy lines. In mid-2002, Panhard completed the first prototype of an upgraded Panhard ERC 90 F4 Sagaie (6 × 6) armored car for the French Army. The new version is motorized with a new engine powerful MTU 170 hp coupled to a Renk automatic transmission. This light vehicle is in service in many armies in the world, with among them the French land forces operating 193 ERC 90. In January 2022, the French Ministry of Defense has announced that the ERC-90 would be withdrawn from service in the French armed forces, but the vehicle remains in service with Argentina, Chad, Gabon, Ivory Coast, Mexico and Nigeria.

ERC-90 Sagaie main variants:

- ERC 90 F4 Sagaie 2: the model has a longer, wider hull and is powered by two Peugeot XD 3T four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engines each developing 98 hp at 4,150 rpm.
- ERC 90 F1 Lynx: This is fitted with a Lynx 90 turret designed and manufactured by Hispano-Suiza (which is no longer involved in the design, development and production of armored fighting vehicle turrets) and armed with a 90 mm F1 gun, a 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun and two 80 mm smoke grenade dischargers on either side of the turret at the rear.
- ERC 90 CMI: The vehicle is equipped with a two-men crew CMI CSE-90 turret. Equipped with a 90 mm gun and the last generation control system, the ERC CSE-90 is the best compromise between weight and firepower. ERC 90 CMI is motorized with a Diesel MTU engine of 170 Hp and equipped with an automatic Renk gearbox.

Technical Data

Armament
The ERC 90 Sagaie is fitted with a two-man turret armed with a 90 mm F4 gun and one 7.62mm coaxial machine gun. The 90mm gun has a muzzle velocity of 950 m/sec fires a hollow charge round capable of perforating 320mm of armor plate with an impact angle of between 0° and 65". The normal engagement distance is 1100 m. In the case of concentrations of troops in open areas, HE round can be used with a projectile weight of 5.3 kg. The effectiveness is equivalent to that of a traditional 105mm round. On more 7.62 mm machine is mounted on the top of the commander hatch. Two 80 mm smoke grenade dischargers are mounted on either side of the turret at the rear. A total 20 rounds of ammunition for the main gun are carried in the turret.
Design and protection
The hull of the ERC 90 Sagaie is made in all-welded steel which provides a protection STANAG 4569 level 3 protection over the frontal arc and level 2 protection over other parts of the vehicle. The V-shaped welded steel structure on the bottom deflects the force of bomb blasts and protects the floor against damage from mines. The driver is seated at the front of the hull, slightly to the left of the vehicle's centreline. The turret is mounted in the center of the vehicle with the commander at the left and the gunner at the right. A rear opening door is provided on the left side of the hull. One stowage basket is mounted on each side of the turret.
Mobility
The latest version of ERC 90 Sagaie is motorized with an MTU Diesel engine of 170 Hp coupled to an automatic Renk gearbox with a maximum power of 125 kW at 2,300 Rpm. The vehicle uses a 6x6 chassis. The vehicle's suspension system has been very carefully designed. All six wheels are independently sprung and their self-locking differentials coupled to the suspension system based on hydraulic shock absorbers, coil springs and rubber mechanical stops give good cross country capabilities. The extent of these capabilities can be easily determined from the following figures: max trench of approximately one meter, with an identical figure for the vertical obstacle, the maximum gradient of 60%, and the lateral tilt of 30%. The ERC 90 Sagaie can run at a maximum road speed of 95 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 800 km.
Accessories
A white searchlight is mounted at the left of the main armament. The ERC 90 Sagaie has a turret-mounted ventilator and internal lights as standard. Optional equipment includes an NBC system, a ground navigation compass, air conditioning equipment, and a front-mounted winch with 60 m of cable and a capacity of 3,500 kg. The driver hatch is equipped with three forward-facing day periscopes. The forward day periscope can be replaced by an image intensification periscope for night driving, Commander and gunner hatches are equipped with periscopes for all-round observation. A telescopic sight is provided for the gunner. The amphibious elements will be removed during the upgrade of the vehicle and the middle road wheel on either side will now always be in the lowered position. On current vehicles, the middle road wheel is normally raised when traveling on roads and lowered for cross-country work to improve traction.
