Description
The latest model of the battle-proven BAE Systems BvS 10 tracked all-terrain armoured vehicle, the BvS 10 Mk II, was presented for the first time to the public at the Defence exhibition in London, DSEI 2009. BvS 10 Mk II is the basis for all future production vehicles because it has a greater payload, a higher level of protection due to a redesigned hull floor and a new armour package, a more powerful Cummins engine and an upgraded electrical system. So far, it has been produced in five basic configurations, including ambulance, command post vehicle, repair and recovery, troop carrier and UAV platform. In November 2010, France has taken delivery of the first of 53 BvS 10 Mk II all-terrain armoured vehicles from BAE Systems Land Systems Hagglunds.

Armament
The BvS10 Mk II can ve equipped with a ring mount armed with a 7.62mm or 12.7 mm machine gun. In option, the vehicle can be fitted with a remote weapon station. To increase his protection, the BvS10 Viking is also equipped with two groups of 4 smoke-grenades dischargers, mounted to the front of the vehicle, on the top of each front window. The driver or vehicle commander can operate smoke dischargers, which can fire smoke or white phosphorous grenades.
Design and protection
The layout of the BvS10 Mk II is similar to the original BvS10. The hull of the BvS10 Mk II Viking is made up of steel armor-plates, which give basic protection against 7.62mm armour-piercing rounds and 152mm artillery shell fragments from a range of more than 10m. The BvS10 Mk II can be fitted with add-on protection which increase the protection at level 2a/2b against mine and IED (Improvised Explosive Devices). In option, the BvS10 Mk II can be equipped with an RPG bar armour protection. It functions by placing a rigid slatted grid around the vehicle, which disrupts the shaped charge of the warhead by either crushing it, preventing optimal detonation from occurring, or by damaging the fuzing mechanism, preventing detonation. It can, however, be defeated by tandem-charge designs, such as the RPG-27 and RPG-29.
Propulsion
The BvS10 Mk II is motorized with a 6-cyl in-line six-cylinder turbo diesel engine designed by Cummins and producing 275bhp (202kW at 2,500rpm). The suspension of BvS10 Mk II is composed of 6 small road wheels on each side of the chassis, there is no track-return rollers. Only one idler wheel is mounted at the front. The suspension is the same for the front and rear vehicles. The BvS10 Mk Ii can run at a maximum road speed of 65 km/h and a maximum road range of 500 km.
Accessories
The BvS10 Mk II is equipped with standard combat equipment as wire cutter mounted at the front of the hull, a reverse camera fitted at the rear of the second tracked unit and night vision equipment. The BvS10 Mk II is fully amphibious, being able to swim in deeper water with less than two minutes preparation including closing holes and fitting a front vane to prevent a bow wave washing over the front windows. The water speed is 5 km/h.
