Ukrainian soldiers have already captured 14 Russian 2S33 latest generation 152mm howitzers

Ukrainian army continues to capture an impressive number of combat vehicles used by the Russian armed forces including the 2S33 also named 2S19M2 MSTA-SM2, the latest generation of 152mm tracked-self-propelled howitzer in the 2S129 howitzers family.

The first 2S33 also named 2S19M2 was delivered for the first time in December 2017 to a new artillery unit of the combined arms of the Western Military District of the Russian army deployed in the Moscow region.

According to the military balance 2021, the Russian armed forces have a total of self-propelled howitzers including 150 2S1 Gvozdika, 800 2S3 Akatsiya, 100 2S5 Giatsint-S, 500 2S19/2S19M1 Msta-S, 320 2S19M2/2S33 Msta-SM, 8 2S35 Koalitsiya-SV, 260 2S7M Malka as well as 4,260 self-propelled howitzers in store including 2,000 2S1 Gvozdika, 1,000 2S3 Akatsiya, 850 2S5 Giatsint-S, 150 2S19 Msta-S and 260 2S7 Pion.

Citing open information, currently, during the combats in Ukraine, a total of 9 Russian army 2S33 self-propelled howitzers would have been destroyed or damaged while 14 would have been captured by the Ukrainian soldiers.

The 2S33 MSTA-SM is an improved version of the 2S19 MSTA-S 152mm tracked self-propelled howitzer. The design is similar to the previous version of the 2S19 with the driver's compartment at the front, turret in the center, and powerpack at the rear.

The 2S33 is armed with a new 2A79 152mm cannon which has a greater range of fire. The 2S33 artillery howitzer has a new range of more than 40 km, compared to the 2S19 which has a maximum firing range of 25 km. It can fire all the standard 152mm ammunition used by the artillery vehicles of the Russian army.

The 2S33 can also fire the latest generation of Russian-made precision-guided munitions Krasnopol-D equipped with GPS guidance which has a maximum firing range of 43 km. It can also fire older Krasnopol-M2 laser-guided munitions that have a firing range of up to 26 km.
