The 2S19 is the backbone of the Russian artillery forces and the first version of the self-propelled howitzer was introduced to the Russian army in 1989. The chassis and suspension of the 2S19 are based main battle tank chassis, with the suspension and running gear from the T-80 tank and the power pack from the T-72 Main Battle Tank.

The design of the 2S19 consists of three main parts with the driver compartment located at the front center of the hull, the turret in the center, and the powerpack at the rear. The hull and turret are of all-welded steel armor construction which provides protection from the firing of small arms, artillery shell splinters, and land mines.

The armament of the 2S19 includes one 2A64 152mm gun and one 12.7mm heavy machine gun mounted on the turret roof. The 152 mm 2A64 gun fires HE-FRAG (High-Explosive Fragmentation) round designated OF-45 to a maximum firing range of 24.7 km.

In mid-2000 it was confirmed that two new versions of the 152 mm 2S19 (MSTA-S) self-propelled artillery system had been developed including the 2S19M and the 2S19M1 equipped with a new Automatic Gun Fire-Control System (AGFCS).

The 2S33 MSTA-SM2 was unveiled for the first time in September 2013 during the defense exhibition in Nizhny Tagil and was introduced in the Russian army in 2017. The howitzer is armed with a new 2A79 152mm cannon which has a greater range of fire. The 2S33 artillery howitzer has now a firing range of more than 40 km, compared to the 2S19 which has a maximum firing range of 25 km.

The 2S33 is also able to fire the Krasnopol-D precision-guided munitions with GPS guidance with a maximum firing range of up to 43 km. The gun is also compatible with older Krasnopol-M2 laser-guided munitions that have a firing range of up to 26 km.
