A pro-Russian journalist was doing a report on the battlefield to explain the combat capabilities of the Russian 2S4 Tyulpan 240mm self-propelled mortar, but he never thought that he was busy revealing the position of the artillery system, thanks to images broadcast on television.
The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has increased in the armed forces and with the use of satellite images; it has become very easy to determine a position on the battlefield. In this case, the images were broadcasted on the television and then used to determine the exact position of the Russian artillery system.
Citing information from the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, the 2S4 was forced to leave its position after being spotted and it was destroyed a few minutes later.
The 2S4 Tyulpan is a 240mm self-propelled mortar carrier that is based on a tracked armored vehicle. It is the largest mortar system in use today. The 2S4 has a crew of four with the other five crew members being carried in the support vehicle.
The mortar system 2S4 Tyulpan can fire a wide range of bombs as conventional high-explosive fragmentation, with a weight of 130 kg and has a maximum range of 9,5 km, high-explosive fragmentation rocket-assisted projectile with a weight of 228 kg and a maximum range of 18,000 m, nuclear and chemical munitions. Mortar bombs are kept in two drums located along the hull sides.
The 240mm mortar system of the 2S4 is mounted on a modified chassis of the tracked chassis used by the SA-4 Ganef 2K1 Krug air defense missile system. The vehicle is able to reach a maximum road speed of 60 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 500 km.
