Description

The Anka is an advanced Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) UAV (Unmanned Aerial System) developed by the Turkish Aerospace Industries for the requirements of its Turkish Armed Forces. The Anka UAV can performed day and night, all-weather reconnaissance, target detection / identification and intelligence missions with its EO/IR and SAR payloads, featuring autonomous flight capability including Automatic Take-off and Landing. In 2013, the Turkish government signed up with aerospace specialist Tusas Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) for an order of 10 Ankas and ground stations. Under the deal, the first serial production deliveries will take place between 2016 and 2018.Since its first flight in December 2010, ANKA system has accumulated more than 140 flight hours, during which flight control, data link, propulsion, fuel, landing gear, environmental control, ice protection and electrical systems, as well as mission systems including EO/IR payload, ATC radio and data recorder were tested at altitudes reaching 26000ft. Autopilot, navigation, automatic loiter pattern and ATOLS capabilities were demonstrated throughout the flight envelope, including severe weather conditions.

Design

The Anka UAV structure is of composite material construction, while some fittings and frames are built using high-strength material to withstand concentrated loads. The fuselage is covered by a mono-block bottom skin. The wing and tail components include front and rear spars as well as ribs. The UAV is equipped with dual redundant control surfaces driven by a dedicated electro-mechanical actuator. An electro-expulsive ice protection system (IPS) de-ices the wing and tail leading edges.

Mobility

The Anka UAV is powered by a diesel engine rated at 155-hp. The propulsion is provided by a three-blade constant speed propeller. It can fly at an altitude of 30,000 feet (9,200 m) for 24 hours.

Payloads equipment

The Anka MALE UAV can carry two payloads for the intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance (ISTAR) missions. These include an electro-optic / forward looking infrared / laser range finder (EO/FLIR/LRF) payload (AselFLIR-300T) and synthetic aperture radar / ground moving target indicator / inverse SAR (SAR/GMTI/ISAR) payload.

Combat use

The ANKA UAV incorporates a heavy-fuel engine and electro-expulsive Ice Protection System with an Advanced Ground Control Station and dual datalink allowing operational security and ease. The system is expandable with a Transportable Image Exploitation Station, Radio Relay, Remote Video Terminal and SATCOM. The flight operations of Anka are controlled and monitored using an advanced ground control station (GCS). The GCS is equipped with dual command and control consoles, as well as simulation and playback capabilities. The payloads of UAV are controlled in real time from the GCS during flight. The GCS is housed in a NATO compliant ACEIII type shelter. It complies with the STANAG 4586 standard. The control station can be interfaced with external command, control, communications, computers and intelligence (C4I) systems.
