During coventional combat, mortar attacks are used to hit hidden targets or to flatten buildings of the enemy. In the current case of Syria, President Bashar al-Assad is using mortar attacks for a complete destruction of the city of Homs.

The 2S4 Tyulpan is designed to demolish fortification and fieldworks and to defeat manpower and equipment. The mortar system was also used in the past by the Czech Republic and Slovakia, Iraq and Lebanon but as far as it is known it is no longer in front line service with these countries.

The 2S4 Tyulpan is capable of firing laser-guided munitions, and also munitions with chemical and nuclear wrahead. Russian sources have stated that the tactical nuclear and chemical projectiles have now been phased out of service.
