Description

The Eagle IV is a wheeled armoured vehicle made by the Swiss Defense Company Mowag, now a subdivision of General Dynamics. The MOWAG Eagle IV was developed as a private venture. It follows the line of the Eagle I, II and III. Previous vehicles were based on the Humvee 4x4 chassis. In December 2003, Mowag rolled out the Eagle IV 4×4 vehicle. Eagle IV is built on the DURO chassis with payload increased to 2,400kg and a reduction in width of 120mm which allows two fully equipped vehicles to be transported in a C-130 aircraft without special preparation.

Armament

The Eagle IV can be fitted with a roof mounted remotely controlled weapon station, armed with 7.62-mm machine gun or 40-mm automatic grenade launcher. Some vehicles are fitted with smoke grenade dischargers. The German version of the Eagle IV will be equipped with a remotely controlled weapon station of the KMW FLW 100/200 type. BAE Systems was awarded the contract for the Lemur remotely controlled weapon station for the Danish vehicles in March 2007.

Protection

The Eagle IV , using a different chassis, based on the Duro light truck, also produced by Mowag. It’s combat weight reaches 7,600 kg including 2,400 of payload and high level protection meeting STANAG 4569 level III protection and STANAG 4569 Level IIa mine protection (6kg TNT under each wheel). The Duro chassis gives the vehicle an extremely high off-and on-road mobility. The passive armour protects from small arms fire, shell splinters and some mines.

Mobility

The Eagle IV is motorized with a turbocharged 5.9-litre Cummins diesel mounted at the front that dispatches a beefy 184 KW (250 hp) to the four corners of the vehicle via a rear-mounted five-gear Allison automatic with 5 speed (the aft location of the gear-box essentially helps balance the weight over the front and rear axles). Compared with its predecessor, the ‘IV sees its power-to-weight ratio boost from 24.8 kW to a neat 33. The Eagle can run at a maximum speed of 110 km/h.

Accessories

The Eagle IV width is smaller than the Humvee, which allows two ready to combat Eagle IVs to be transported in a C-130 without special preparations. Standard equipment includes powered steering, smoke grenade launchers, a nuclear, biological and chemical defensive system, run-flat tyres and communications equipment.. Optional equipment includes air conditioning, a central tyre-pressure regulation system, a self-recovery winch and an add-on mine-protection system.
