At the International Aerospace and Defence Exhibition AAD 2010, the South African Company Paramount Group unveils a new wheeled armoured fighting vehicle, the "Mbomber". Being unveiled for the first time at AAD will be the Mbombe – a brand new armoured vehicle of innovative design offering better protection against IEDs than many vehicles currently used by NATO forces in Afghanistan. Coalition forces have thousands of armoured vehicles in Afghanistan and Iraq, but Paramount Group has designed a groundbreaking new vehicle that is set to take the market by storm. Mbombe is a six-wheeled infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) with a revolutionary mineresistant flat hull (rather than v-shaped). This means that it has a lower profile than typical MRAP vehicles, a solution which has been sought for many years. Ivor Ichikowitz, Executive Chairman of the Paramount Group, the largest independent defence and aerospace contractor in Africa, said: “Named after a famed African warrior, we believe that with Mbombe Paramount Group has developed a groundbreaking new vehicle that will take the international market by storm. The Mbombe is a mine-protected, high-mobility, armoured fighting vehicle, which can be easily adapted for a wide range of operational roles. |

Armament | The Mbombe presented at the defense exhibition AAD 2010 was equipped with a dual feed 30mm calibre cannon and one 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun mounted to the right side of the main armament. Four smoke-grenades discharger are mounted to each side of the turret. | Design and protection | The Mbombe provides ample space for a gunner and 8 fully equipped infantrymen and even at its most basic level it provides outstanding blast protection coupled with excellent levels of defence against kinetic attack. The low silhouette offers a reduced target profile with the armoured hull giving stopping power against ballistic attack up to STANAG 4569 Level IV. Mbombe will withstand the explosion of 10kg of TNT anywhere under its hull or under any wheel station without rupture. Anti-blast seats prevent injury to the crew from the extreme acceleration following an explosion beside or under the vehicle. Modular protection can also be added if necessary to give additional defence against specific threats in any particular area of operations. As standard, the Mbombe offers all-round crew protection against RPG threats and the special protection modules provides protection against IEDs. Armour cage are mounted to each windows of the vehicle. | Propulsion | The Mbombe can be motorized with a 300 kW power engine coupled to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The Mbombe is equipped with 6x6 wheeled chassis able to carry considerables loads over all types of terrain without loss of mobility. The three axles give it excellent cross-country performance and make it an exceptionally versatile platform that can be modified to meet the exacting requirements of military operations anywhere in the world. | Accessories | The Mbombe can also be fitted and equipped with a day/night vision capability and sensors to extend the ranges of observation and engagement if these are requested by the customer. The Mbombe is also equipped with anti-blast seats which are designed to prevent damage to the crew from the extreme acceleration following an explosion beside or under the vehicle. | | Specifications | Back to top | Armament | Canon 30 mm calibre and one coaxial 7.62 mm machine gun | Country users | Prototype | Designer Company | Parmount Group | Accessories | Day/night vision, laser detection system, rear view camera. | Crew | 3 + 8 soldiers | | Armor | Mine Blast STANAG 4569 Level 4 and Ballistic protection | Weight | 27,000 kg | Speed | 100 km/h | Range | 700 km on road a | Dimensions with turret | Length, 7,72 m; Width, 2,55 m; Height, 2,34 m | | | | |
