SOFEX 2014: MMIST presents the Sherpa Provider Guidance Unit and Skylink system
By Stylianos Kanavakis
Precision air delivery is a gift from the sky when it comes to resupplying front line or hard to reach units. As the lessons learned from the operations in Afghanistan have shown, 10-15% of the USMC casualties occurred during the resupplying of units, forward operating bases and outposts with food and water. It is, therefore, easily understood how important it is to be able to deliver supplies to these forces without exposing others to the enemy activity.

MMIST Sherpa Provider Guidance Unit

MMIST, a leading company in the sector, has been addressing the needs in this sector since 2003, having sold its products to more than 21 customers in 17 countries.

At SOFEX 2014, the company exhibits its range of systems. The base product of the whole series is the Sherpa Provider Guidance Unit, as shown in the picture below, which is adapted on the Sherpa family of system payloads.

The brain of the system is the LaunchPADS software which calculates the flight parameters and provides the optimal releasing point for the parachute. By collecting data such as the wind speed and the altitude, it can depict on the screen, on the 2D/3D MapOverlay, a circular area around the point of delivery chosen by the user, where the cargo will land.

MMIST Skylink parachutist navigation and situational awareness system

Having in mind the difficulties not only of the aerial cargo delivery, but of also of those posed during a HALO jump in the evening or in low visibility conditions, MMIST offers the solution of the Skylink parachutist navigation and situational awareness system. It is mounted on a MOLLE platform, combing a radio, a transmitter, a touch-screen and a compass. The user has the ability to see on a map, where the other members of its team and/or the cargo are, while parachuting, the direction and speed of the wind, the distance and ETA from the target as well as its current position.

However, some of the most important options are the ones enabled by the use of the radio. These are the proximity alarms (collision avoidance proximity alerts), the ability to retask while in the air, as the team can select alternate routes for itself and for the Sherpa PADS, the remote control module of the Sherpa during flight and the capability to know where exactly the team and the cargo have landed.

A true “sherpa” in the sky.
