Description BTR-70

The BTR-70, a renowned Russian 8x8 Armored Personnel Carrier (APC), was designed under the industrial label GAZ-4905 in the late 1960s. This Russian-engineered vehicle made its public debut at a military parade in Moscow in November 1980 and rapidly joined the Russian army's ranks in August 1972. Demonstrating its capabilities, the BTR-70 played a crucial role in the Soviet-Afghan War and various smaller Eastern European conflicts. After the Cold War, the UN successfully employed these dependable armored fighting vehicles (AFVs) in the Balkans. Explore the BTR-70's service history and more on our dedicated web page.

Technical Data BTR-70

Armament
The BTR-70 is equipped with a small one-man turret, the same as the one used on its predecessor, the BTR-60PB. The turret is manually operated and can rotate a full 360 degrees, with the gun capable of being elevated from 30 degrees to -6 degrees. The turret is armed with a powerful 14.5 mm KPVT machine gun and a 7.62 mm PKVT machine gun, giving it superior firepower and the ability to engage both ground and air targets effectively.
Design and protection
The BTR-70's hull and turret are constructed from all-welded steel armor, providing exceptional protection against small arms fire and shell splinters. The driver and commander are positioned at the front of the hull, with the commander seated on the right and the driver on the left. The commander's hatch cover opens to the front, while the driver's hatch cover opens at a 45-degree angle towards the vehicle's center. At the rear of the hull, there is a troop compartment with three firing ports on each side and a one-day vision block for each port. The compartment also features a small door between the second and third axles that opens to the front. The six infantrymen sit on a bench seat down the center, back-to-back, and can utilize the firing ports to engage targets.
Mobility
The BTR-70's powerful 8x8 chassis is propelled by two ZMZ-4905 8-cylinder petrol engines that can generate 120 horsepower. The vehicle boasts a maximum road speed of 80 km/h and an impressive cruising range of 600 km. Inside the vehicle, the driver has the ability to adjust the tire pressure of all eight wheels, ranging from 2.8 to 0.5 kg/cm2. These features make the BTR-70 an ideal armored personnel carrier for a wide range of military operations.
Combat Equipment
The BTR-70 is an exceptionally versatile vehicle, fully amphibious and able to reach a maximum speed of 10 km/h in the water thanks to its single water jet mounted at the rear of the hull. Before entering the water, the trim vane is erected at the front of the hull to ensure smooth navigation. The BTR-70 comes equipped with a range of features, including a comprehensive NBC system, a central tire-pressure regulation system, and a powerful front-mounted winch with a maximum pull capacity of 6,000 kg and 50 meters of cable. These capabilities make the BTR-70 an ideal choice for a wide range of military and emergency response operations.
