Description
The BTR-70 is a Russian-made 8x8 armoured vehicle personnel carrier which was shown for the first time to the public in November 1980 during a military parade in Moscow. The vehicle was originally developed during the late 1960s under the industrial designator GAZ-4905. The BTR-70 enters in service with the Russian army in August 1972. The BTR-70 was widely used during the Soviet war in Afghanistan and many smaller conflicts in Eastern Europe. After the Cold War these AFV saw service with the UN in the Balkans with high success.

Armament
The BTR-70 is fitted with a small one-man turret which is the same used on the BTR-60PB. The turret is armed with a 14.5 KPVT and a 7.62 mm PKVT machine gun. The turret is manually controlled and can rotate 360° with gun elevation from 30° to -6°.
Design and protection
The hull and the turret are made in all-welded steel armour which provide a protection against firing of small arms and shell splinters. The commander and driver are seated at the front of the hull, commander at the right and driver at the left. The commander has a single-piece hatch cover that opens to the front. The driver also has a single-piece hatch cover that opens at a 45º angle towards the centre of the vehicle. The troop compartment is at the rear of the hull with three firing ports and one day vision block on each side. Between the second and third axles is a small door that opens to the front. The six infantrymen sit on a bench seat down the centre, back-to-back, enabling them to use the firing ports.
Propulsion
The BTR-80 uses a 8x8 chassis and is motorized with 2 × ZMZ-4905 8-cylinder petrol developing 120 hp. The BTR-70 can run at a maximum road speed of 80 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 600 km. The driver can adjust the tyre pressure of all eight wheels from 2.8 to 0.5 kg/cm2 from inside the vehicle.
Accessories
The BTR-70 is fully amphibious and propelled in the water at a maximum speed of 10 km/h by a single water-jet mounted at the rear of the hull. Before entering the water the trim vane is erected at the front of the hull. Standard equipment includes an NBC system, a central tyre-pressure regulation system and a front-mounted winch which is provided with 50 m of cable and has a maximum pull capacity of 6,000 kg.
