Description

The BMPT-72, also nicknamed Terminator 2, is a tank fire support vehicle developed and designed by the Russian company Uralvagonzavod. It was unveiled in 2013 during the Russian Arms Expo defense exhibition that was held in Nizhny Tagil, Russia. The idea to create a new heavily-armed tank support vehicle emerged on the basis of experience acquired by the Russian army during the First Chechen War in the North Caucasus, especially during the urban fighting in Grozny, in 1995 when Russian troops lost a large number of combat vehicles in guerrilla warfare tactics used by Chechen separatists. Like the initial BMP-T, the BMPT-72 is based on the chassis of the T-72 tank also produced by Uralvagonzavod. The vehicle offers new protection and firepower focused on urban operations. The BMPT-72 is able to fight a full range of modern targets like main battle tanks, infantry fighting vehicles and other combat vehicles, dismounted infantry, and guided-missile combat teams. Compared with the initial production model, the BMPT-72 has an improved fire control system and better turret weapon station protection. According to Uralvgonzavod, the key advantage the BMPT-72 provides is that it can promptly, and at minimal cost, upgrade an army’s might without purchasing new high-cost machines.

Technical Data

Armament
The BMPT-72, or Terminator 2, is fitted with a new unmanned fully stabilized electromechanical turret, with a lower profile and better protection. The main armament of the BMPT-72 turret consists of two 30mm automatic 2A42 guns and one PKTM 7.62mm coaxial machine gun which can be used against light armored vehicles and manpower. The guns can fire a wide range of ammunitions such as APERS-T (Anti-Personnel ammunitions), HEF-I (High-explosive Fragmentation Incendiary), AP-T (Armour Piercing)., and KE (Kinetic Energy). Two Ataka-T anti-tank guided missile launchers are mounted on each side of the turret. The 9M1201 missiles can be armed with two types of warhead: hollow-charge, and high-explosive concrete-piercing. The BMPT-72 is equipped with a computerized fire control system with a multichannel sighting system and weapon high-accuracy laying systems. The vehicle carries 850 rounds for the 30mm guns and 2,100 rounds for the 7.62mm machine gun. The turret protection includes armored shields for the missiles, protecting them from splinters and the firing of small arms. The turret can be rotated at 360 ° with an elevation from -5° to +25° for the anti-tank missiles, and from -5° to +45° for the guns and coaxial machine gun. The anti-tank missiles can engage a target up to a maximum distance of 6,000 m while the guns have a maximum range of 2,500 against light armored vehicles and 4,000 m against light tactical vehicles and troops. A screening system increases the self-protection of the BMPT-72 which is designed to counter laser target-designators and laser rangefinders. Six smoke grenade launchers are mounted on each side of the turret. When the screening system warns the crew of laser tracking, a smoke screen is created by the launch of grenades.

Design and protection
The BMPT-72 or Terminator 2 has a crew of three with the removal of two grenade launchers, while the first version of BMP-T had a crew of five. The driver is located at the front center of the hull, with a gunner and commander at the rear. A panoramic sight is mounted in front of the tank commander. The gunner's position is equipped with day periscopes on 360°. The BMPT-72 hull and turret are made of steel armor and integrate the latest protection systems with explosive reactive armor (ERA) on the turret front, a detachable ERA module on the glacis plate, and appliqué ERA on the sides of the hull, and turret. The rear parts of the turret and the chassis are fitted with slat armor to increase protection against anti-tank rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) attacks. The anti-tank launch units include armored shields for the missiles, protecting them from splinters and small arms fire.

Mobility
The BMPT-72 (Terminator 2) can be motorized with two types of engine: the original 850 hp B84MC or the new 1,000 hp. B92C2 powerplant. Both are 12-cylinder V-type multi-fuel, liquid-cooled Diesel engines. The B92C2 is a turbo supercharger that offers higher power and efficiency. The engine is coupled to a hydraulically assisted transmission with 7 forward and 1 reverse gears. The BMPT-72 also uses an auxiliary power unit to extend mission endurance and run all systems during a silent watch. The BMPT-72 is able to reach a maximum road speed of 60 km/h with a maximum cursing range of 500 km. The torsion bar suspension on each side consists of six road wheels with the idler at the front, a drive sprocket at the rear and three return rollers supporting the inside of the track only. Shock absorbers are fitted at the first, second, and sixth roadwheel stations. The upper part of the suspension is protected by armor plates at the front and slat armor at the rear. A dozer blade mounted under the nose of the tank is used for clearing obstacles and preparing fire positions like most other Russian tanks. The dozer blade can be brought into the operating position in 1 or 2 minutes; it enables the BMTT-72 tank to prepare its own defilade position without calling on engineer support. The BMPT-72 can cross a vertical step of 850 mm, a trench wide of 2.8 m, and a fording depth of 1.2m without preparation (1.8 m after 15 min of preparation).
Accessories
The BMPT-72 or Terminator 2 is fitted with an advanced automatic fire control system that can be used for terrain observation, target location and detection on the move day and night. A laser range finder is also available. The commander and the gunner positions of the BMPT-72 are equipped with a control panel and LCD screen. The gunner's position is equipped with a multichannel device with sighting and thermal channels, laser range finder, GM laser control channel, and independent FoV (Field of View) stabilized in azimuth and elevation. The commander's panoramic sight is fitted with video and thermal channels, a laser range finder and independent FoV stabilized in azimuth and elevation. Gunner and commander are able to detect a target at a distance of 5,000 m with a sighting channel and 3,500 m with the thermal channel. The ballistic computer is fully digital with a set of weather and topographic sensors. The BMPT-72 is provided with an NBC system and can be fitted with a snorkel for deep water fording: it can be fitted with a snorkel to cross a river at a depth of 5 m maximum.
