The
MLI-84M infantry fighting vehicle is an upgraded
variant of the Romanian MLI-84. The original MLI-84
is an indigenous variant of the Soviet BMP-1 IFV,
but has a lengthened hull and additional heavy machine
gun mounted over the troop compartment. The decision
to upgrade ageing infantry fighting vehicles came
in 1995. To date 99 Romanian MLI-84 IFVs were upgraded
to the MLI-84M standard. The MLI-84M has a crew
of two and can carry 9 fully equipped troops. There
are a number of firing ports for the occupants.
Troops enter and leave the vehicle via the rear
doors or roof hatches.
The
MLI-84M has it's 73-mm gun removed and fitted
with a fully-stabilized OWS-25 Overhead
Weapon Station, developed in Israel and
supplied by Rafael. The OWS-25 is armed
with a 25-mm Oerlikon KBA cannon and 7.62-mm
coaxial machine gun. It is also equipped
with two Yugoslavian Maljutka-2T anti-tank
guided missiles instead of the Soviet 9M14
Malyutka (AT-3). Alternatively it can be
fitted with four Spike ATGMs, developed
in Israel. However any ATGWs are fitted
only as an option. The OWS-25 weapon station
can target both land targets and low-flying
helicopters.
Protection
The
MLI-84M infantry fighting vehicle provides
protection against 14.5-mm rounds. Survivability
is further enhanced by the installation
of a locally developed laser and infra-red
warning system called SAILR-M, which is
coupled to 81 mm electrically operated smoke
grenade launchers. SAILR-M comprises two
sensor units and a central processing command
and display unit. It is claimed that it
can initiate a response within 50 milliseconds
of detecting a threat.
Propulsion
The
MLI-84M is motorised with a new engine UTD-20
(a 6-cylinder 4-stroke V-shaped airless-injection
water cooled multifuel 15.8 litre diesel
engine) with the 8V-1240-DT-S 8-cylinder
4-stroke V-shaped liquid cooled diesel engine
developed in Romania. The new engine is
more powerful as it develops 355 hp (265
kW) but it is heavier and bigger and because
of that the engine compartment had to be
rebuilt in order to fit the new engine.
The fuel capacity was increased to 600 liters.
Accessories
The
MLI-84M is fitted with a laser warning receiver,
smoke grenade dischargers and thermal smoke
generator. Vehicle is also fitted with an
NBC protection and automatic fire suppression
systems.
